So, glass tumble photo for anyone who hasn’t done it. started with what I assumed would be fake blue glass. Definitely proved to be correct. but I’m happy with the outcome. 60/90 in Rotary tumbler for 3-4ish weeks? i don’t believe I’ll run it through any other stages. Unless I smash it to make smaller bits.

Good looking tumble Heather! I've got some Velvet Obsidian finishing up polishing in the vibe right now...I'm dying to see if it's going to turn out.

What is meant by fake glass? Is it because the blue got tumbled out or is it actually not real glass? I've never tumbled glass before so those are interesting.

Yeah the blue was just on the outside. Or inside? Real glass, fake blue! 😂 I knew what I meant! I am pleased with the results, and will definitely do glass again. Likely not white/clear, but something I know is a really nice color. Also, they aren't kidding, the gas build up with glass was crazy! I left for a week out of town! I'm lucky it didn't leak all over! AND, SOOOOOO glad I added the boot tray underneath my tumblers right before I left too. At least if it had leaked, it wasn't going to go everywhere! What is meant by fake glass? Is it because the blue got tumbled out or is it actually not real glass? I've never tumbled glass before so those are interesting.

CLErocks yes glass builds up pressure inside the barrel. The only time I’ve had tumblers pop open was with glass or obsidian. I think the tiny bubbles inside the glass are pressurized. Your glass turned out nice.

I hadn't heard that glass in a tumbler causes gas buildup. I wonder what the mechanism is that generates the gas. Can anyone give me an explanation? Thanks...

Hi dugGlass and obsidian aren’t crystalline like most rocks or minerals. They are considered a viscous fluid. When they are formed, microscopic bubbles are incorporated in the material. In older glass you can sometimes see the bubbles. I think these bubbles are under slightly more than atmospheric pressure. As the glass is ground down and the bubbles are exposed, they release their tiny amount of pressure. It doesn’t take much of a pressure buildup to pop the top off a typical rotary tumbler which mostly rely on a friction seal. A tumbler with a solid mechanical seal probably would not build enough pressure to fail. Anyway, that’s my theory and I’m sticking with it. jamesp could probably add more info. He has tumbled more glass than anyone I know. Welcome to RTH by the way. It’s a fun group of people.

I think the clear glass is pretty. It kinda looks surreal.
