I visited a lily pad jasper site a few weeks ago and filled a bucket from float, even though I wasn't quite sure what I'd do with it. I have a couple of test pieces in the tumbler that I threw in with some other jasper and they mostly came out of stage 1 looking good, though one kind of fell apart. I sent this piece through the trim saw yesterday and really love the pattern that emerged. Unfortunately the rock seems to be inconsistent in hardness and most pieces are porous or fractured. I really love the look of it though and wonder what others have been able to do with it - I'd love to see examples!

I made these more than 10 years ago and. I have more but didn't want to go through all the boxes. What I look for in Lily Pad is clear areas in the slab.

I'm not sure if I got the right id. I believe these are rainforest and don't think they are synonymous

I agree with James, aptly named. It looks a lot like the "Rain Forest Jasper" I've been tumbling with some success, wonder if it's the same. From my experience nearly every piece has a soft spot, mostly where the red and white spots are, sometimes there are green rough spots as well. I've mostly just keep tumbling them until the soft spots wear thru, sometimes it works out and you are left with beautiful opaque inclusions like stardiamond is showing.

So that’s from somewhere around central Oregon?
It looks just like rainforest jasper* from Queensland, Australia.
* actually an orbicular rhyolite

There is some material being mined in Oregon that looks a lot like rainforest jasper from Queensland but is somewhat softer. It was being sold at Tucson in 2020 at the Electric Park. I made several trips to Mount Hay in Queensland as a geologist working on a paper and see the mine owners every year at Tucson. The real "Rain Forest" is abudant and not very expensive. It is a great lapidary material and easy to work with as it holds together well.

Interesting examples, thanks for sharing. I just gave the one pictured a quick spin through the cab king and most components wore pretty evenly, though the white is kind of dull and boring. The green in between is shining up nicely. I have so much that I'll dig through it to see if I can actually find a good couple of quality pieces to shine up. It's just so interesting to look at that I hope it works!
And yes, this is from a small spot in Central Oregon just north of Madras. I went out with our local club a few weeks ago and some people were really excited about the material while others were kind of 'meh'. I had no idea what it was so I just picked up pieces with nice color. I have a bunch that is purple so I'm curious to see if that behaves differently.

Thanks, I appreciate it! As I said in my intro thread, I've lurked here for a while but never bothered to create an account. But my rock hounding over the years has led to quite a stash of rough so I've recently upped my lapidary game and started working with it more. It's more fun that just sorting through my collection!

I’m out of prineville and if I’m not mistaken, it’s in between terrebonne and culver, just south of madras. I was going to go out and grab some for collection purposes, so just curious I have the right spot.

Yep, you're right. I was responding to that message at the same time I was messaging a friend about the location of Richardson's so my head was in a different space. It's near the scales on 97 just south of Culver/north of Terrebonne.
