Honestly, that’s a good cab for your first one. The girdle can most definitely be tricky when starting out.

Yay! Great job especially for your first. I don't think the girdle looks so bad. You definitely got the dome done right.
Be careful... this is addictive!

First one? Could've fooled me! I think it looks very good.
In profile it looks like your girdle gradually slopes down to the bottom edge, as in a traditional cabochon cut (which is how I cut). The only suggestion I have is that the bevel on the cab's outer edge can be fairly thin (~ 1 mm) and doesn't need to be rounded.

Great job on number one! It all goes down hill from here... The shape and done look great -the girdle is doing pretty good (my first was much worse lol). My conscience is getting to me though, helping another down the path of addiction... -Nicholas

Good instructions & not a bad result. Wish I had a club that I could learn from . Wait a minute --that's what RTH forum is for :-)

I think you did a great job on your first cab! You got a really nice polish, too. The more you do, the easier it gets.

Way to go Quartz! In my opinion, Stone Canyon is a hit or miss material with regards to getting a "high polish" on the finish. I've worked some that came out great, and others that...well...not so great. I don't think your polish is bad, but if it's not where you think it should be, there's a good chance it's the material, and not something you did wrong. The dome on that cab is AWESOME! The curvature is spot-on! I think your girdle issue is due to working it by hand. I know a LOT of people work their cabs without being dopped...but a dop would give you a lot more control when it comes to working the girdle (in my opinion). I give you MAD PROPS for working that cab without a dop...something I've tried and was not real happy with the results. Overall, that really is a fantastic first cab!! There's been several plunges down the rabbit hole I've noticed this week...so welcome to the club! LOL
