Hey everybody, so my cabbing journey has taken a quick stroll from ovals to shield patterns I free hand and go to work. It's been fun and I really like shaping the cabs doming the shields I'm learning as I go, and now I am at a point where I have a stone that I have a dull center after the 14k wheel I didn't see it wet and it was time to eat so I take the stone I side and than once it's dried it shows a matte finish in the center of the broad part. See pics. Any tips on shields ide be all ears. So the small shield in my palm was the first and this one on the dop my second shield type though both are 1st gos on the shape. I tell yah that not to brag or something but to tell yah to tell me what I did right or wrong emphasis on wrong because I was totally winging it and I don't know if I tried a second it would look similar or not I still feel fresh and not sure what's a good move or a stumbling stone. Thank you all. Johnny aGates

Nice and consistent for free hand work!
I'm not a cabber, but it looks like it might have a slight recess in the middle of the top cab?

I like what you're doing. Looks like you have a good idea of when to keep the ridge from the sharp corners, when to round it off, and how to blend it into the dome in the center, that can be a challenge. That's why I dop a lot when I really don't need to, the stick angle in relation ti the wheel creates a point of reference that is a great visual aid. Especially with old eyes like mine LOL.
The pics of the first one seem to show light reflections that make the top look recessed. A lot of the time with flat tops a little bit of dome can be coaxed out of them on the 220 and 280 wheels without removing much material.

Rockoonz stewdoggI wasn't sure if what I was seeing is what I've read as a flat spot but now I see that is a flat spot/ recess than. I'll try to do like yah suggest and coax a bit of a dome out of it. When I say free hand I just ment no stencil, I too believe the dop stick is invaluable as a gauge to angles and consistent angles on the stone. I dunno about you but I drive my car with my hands in the steering wheel if you catch my drift ide say if you want good controll consistently to dop the stone after final shaping before doming. In elementary school ide obsessively draw shields and coat of arms instead of studies and now all that doodling is paying off I can't wait for some tower shields to fly off. Maybe some nice elongated elvish fantasy shapes will come off in honor my keen love of Tolkien. Thanks boys any other shield shape conessouir pipe in! Johnny aGates

I don't always dop, and I usually have the perimeter almost complete before I do, so that I can position it as good as possible. Other than really small cabs, I don't use the dop as a handle before the 280 or 600 wheel, For shaping it's only a visual aid. When creating a back bezel the dop gets in the way, especially on the Genie with the wheels so close together. I'm wondering if your shield fixation might lead you to intarsia or even some inlay with carved pieces, a coat of arms? The coat of arms I created for myself in HS art class definitely got the teachers attention, but that was the 70's...

aGates It looks like a slight flat spot on the crown off number 1. Flats are very hard to polish.

Rockoonz Starguy yes I went back to the 220 hard wheel and got a little more shape. Reduced the flat by 50% surface area but I'll be going back to finish the job shortly. Picks to come.
