What is a good replacement for the polish pad on the Lortone flat laps?
I have two of them and no luck finding Lortone pads. I don't suppose there's any major difference between the Covington & Lortone parts is there? Or is there a good homemade solution out there?

Lortone just used indoor/outdoor backless carpet. You can get it at Home Depot in the U.S. Not sure at you local but someone should have something similar.

vegasjames - Yep, vibratory lap. Thanks rmf ! I read about people using carpet but that's a pretty broad term. Got a link? I'll check out Home Depot this weekend.

Does not look like the pads are very expensive though. Might be easier to just buy one.

I used commercial carpet for mine. It comes in rectangles that are big enough to get two 15 inch pads out of it. They are meant to be glued down so the back is rubber which really helps keep the pad from rotating in the pan if it is not cut so it is a very snug fit. The pile on the front is super low. I got lucky when visiting carpet stores in my search. One place I went to had 2 pieces left over from a job they just installed and I got them for free!
If you buy a 15 inch pad that isn't for your specific model you might not get a good fit. I have two 15 inch laps, a Beacon Star and a Raytech. The pans are 15 inch-ish. One is over a quarter inch wider than the other

I have an old 20” Beacon Star vibratory Flat lap. I made new pans for it and now I am dealing with the polishing pad. The teal carpet that’s on there is glued down and all worn out so I’m looking to replace it. I also think the pan underneath may be dished, but won’t know how much till I get the old carpet out. I stopped by Home Depot and got a sample of their outdoor carpet as well as a random piece of commercial carpet with rubber backer that I got for free. The question I have is which thickness to use? The sample piece is 3/16” thick with no backer so it’s very flexible and smashes down easily and feels very cheap. The commercial carpet is about 1/4” thick, not counting the backer and feels much more dense and maybe a little springy? and like it will last longer. Is there an advantage to one over the other? I'd vote for the carpet with the backing. The other one looks like the weave is kind of open and not super durable looking either. I'd be worried that the polish would all just sink thru to the bottom. One thing I'd mention about the carpet with the backing is that the bright colors might bleed out. When I 1st got my lap, it had a piece of low pile red carpet for the polishing pad. I discovered that for some of the thundereggs I polished that had hairline surface cracks, the cracks turned slightly red! It actually looked kind of cool, but it also looked unnatural.

Well crap.
Just noticed tonight that I'm missing 2 springs off my 2nd unit (this is why you never, ever move things in the shop). I found a kit with the balls & springs on a very sketchy website, but that's it. Anyone know where I can get the springs for the Lortone flat laps? Or suggestions where to find a similar alternative?

When a spring on my lap broke, I just went to Lowes and HD with one of the non broken springs and looked for something of the same length and springyness. The one I found has a bit less pull than the original spring, but doesnt appear to effect the operation of the lap. If the springs you find are much different in their pull from the original, it would probably be best to replace all of them.with the same kind

Your replacement point is an excellent rule of thumb that’s served me well.
