It was making a bloodcurdling squeal which diminished a bit when pressure was put on the plate. Made that noise whether it had a plate on it or not. The spindle didn't seem to wobble like the bearing were gone. I finally took the base off, cleaned out the inside (When looked surprisingly dry and not filthy. I spray four or five atmospheres of WD-40 just to beat back any potential moisture. Then I ran it on its lowest speed and applied lithium grease with a Q-Tip and hemostats. At the last minute, I reset pulled the arbor and cleaned up that end with the WD/Lithium combo.
I honest to goodness left it running for five minutes because it is so quiet now. I was quite proud of myself bragged to my wife that I had saved us money.
She said, "That's nice. Was that thing plugged in the whole time you were working on it?"
"Uh...Yeah. But the plug is really hard to get to."
Condescending would be the tone when she pointed and said, "And were you standing in that water while doing this?"
I could see where she was headed with this, so I said, "Oh! Did you see that I got Oatmeal Cookies at the grocery store?" Crushed Ego Averted!
So, I realize that the fact that the machine made the noise in the first place means it's probably seen it's best days. Heck, it still has the Simi Valley address on the machine. It has been a great lucky find. I know that I have been able to make it quieter, but I don't know if I have extended its life.

Good job. I think the manual recommends lubricating the shaft now and then - but cautions against excess oil that could get into the motor.
I fried a motor on one of those a few years ago by forgetting to unplug it before working on it. Don't even remember what I was doing to it, but unmounted motor contacted something it shouldn't have. At least they shipped my replacement motor quickly... .
