I picked up this rock in a local trade deal. It originally came from a local estate sale. I've never seen anything like it before... I cut two slabettes off the rock and left half of it intact. miket I'm tagging you on this one...

I'm gonna say it is a fairburn The thing that's really throwing me for a loop is the interior doesn't have any of the "holly-leaf" fortification pattern that is indicative of Fairburns. Whatever that is that's going on in the interior is cool as heck!!!

That's an awesome rock, whatever it is! RIGHT!!?!!? I just had to stop after those first two slabs were taken off. I want to put the other half in the vibe starting with 500 and see how it turns out. I don't want to lose any of that minute banding on the exterior. I'm tagging rmf to see if he recognizes this for some reason...

Jason, I'm definitely no expert, but I'm kind of leaning the same way that you are,I don't really see the Holly leaf patterns that would make me say Fairburn, either. The bands on the outside would have made me pick it up if I saw it on the ground, but I couldn't definitely say that it's a Fairburn. But I have been wrong once or twice, so who knows. It is definitely a cool rock, however!

I'm convinced it's not a Fairburn...but I don't know what in the world it is...

jasoninsd not sure it could be a really nice prairie agate. if local. has a similar look to oco geodes from Brazil but it is solid. have not seen a fairburn like that but I would not push the point at all.

Thanks so much for chiming in! I'm 100% sure it's not a Fairburn. = There is no tell-tale maple-leaf fortification anywhere on the exterior or interior. I'm 100% sure this is a local rock. = I've found other rocks with that micro-banding on the outside...but the inside was "bland" and looked NOTHING like this one. I'm not sure about Prairie Agate. The inside is what's throwing me for a complete loop. I've never seen a Prairie Agate with that kind of "activity" in the center. My only other thought is potentially Bubble Gum Agate. Generally the interior of a Bubble Gum Agate has botryoidal-type structures with a lot of empty space between them. If somehow, this one had water leach inside with a high silica content...maybe that would explain the interior structure of this one...?? That is a completely "WILD" guess on my part...but it kind of makes sense to me.

1dave - Dave, any clue what "sorcery" (okay, science! LOL) caused the interior structure to this particular piece?

1dave - Dave, any clue what "sorcery" (okay, science! LOL) caused the interior structure to this particular piece? It was manufactured on Earth specifically to mystify Jason. If you look REAL CLOSE you can see where it says - " Made in China." The first image reveals a multitude of irregular shaped vugs with wild outlines. Are they inside or outside the vugs? They are the same twisty fiber worms of moganite as the Oco Geodes. They could be gas bubbles trapped inside an andesite lava flow.
Perhaps an earthquake shook things up during the fill sequences? Such are my wild speculations.

LOL Thank you SO much for chiming in about the possibilities on this one! An earthquake makes sense...I was a bit shook up when I saw the interior!
