I'm assuming you're on the wheels, and not tumbler...?
If so, are your wheels too new? If they're not, then I'm guessing you've got to be getting some cross-contamination somewhere.

actually its on my sphere machine with new diamond buffing pads The new pads might be what's doing it to you. I know I've read (and experienced) that working any kind of obsidian with new diamond wheels/disks/pads usually cause scratches. The diamonds haven't been broken in enough yet and they're what's causing the scratches. If you have some worn in pads, I'd give it another shot with those...otherwise, run some agate spheres for awhile, and come back to the obsidian ones...

i just ordered so sheep skin to make a set of pads I'm trying to understand your setup. If you're running pads with diamond paste on the them for polishing, then I would guess it's a contamination issue...and ordering new pads might do the trick.
