Hello all!! I'm brand-spankin' new to this hobby and am quite excited about it! I've spent a couple months researching rock tumbling before I ordered my first tumbler, a used Lortone 3a, which should arrive on Wednesday! <Insert happy dance here!>. I've been reading a whole lot of posts in the forum and have learned a lot from you all already!
My question is this: Does the area selected for the tumbler have to have heat or air conditioning? It seems most people have theirs in a garage or basement. I've never had a garage, and most houses in Arkansas don't have basements. We do have an outdoor shop that is walled and covered, but it can get as hot as Dante's inferno here. I don't know if that is recommended for a tumbler or if I need to reorganize to find it a "home" inside the house somewhere where the noise won't bother us.
What do y'all think? Thanks!! π

Shouldnβt matter, but donβt want to overheat the lil lortone motor. My shop gets hot in the summer, getting me ready for the afterlife.

I have a Lortone 45C that is in a garage storeroom and run it year round. The room does stay a little cooler than outside in summer and warmer in the winter. Iβm in southern Arizona so it does get quite hot. Currently have had several days 100+, actually 110 a couple of days ago. I would not attempt to run the tumbler in prolonged freezing weather because of the possibility of the slurry freezing.

It's hot here, but the humidity is so high it can feel hard to breathe! But the pointers are always helpful!

Welcome from Washington State. Great question. The shop should work. I think the 3A will do fine in the heat, but the super cold, I've heard about slurry freezing. Maybe take it in the house in winter. You'll feel the motor gets hot, but I think it should be okay. We are still waiting for the warmer weather here in the Northwest. Good luck.

My motors run about 120 degrees in my cool basement. These motors are thermally protected so they should shut down before burning up. If it is a concern I would have a fan blowing across it to remove excessive heat build up. I have been tumbling for 17 years now and never burned up a motor (even from some cheap Chinese tumblers I ran for a while).

Hi lucyWelcome from Michigan. Ask me hiw I can attest to slurry freezing π₯Ά π Nothing happened to the rocks but it took awhile for it to thaw out so I could clean it out and start new. When I did I was going to start it with car windsheild washer fluid but I didn't know if whatever chemical was in there to make it not freeze would hurt the process so I just brought them inside and tumbled them in my craft room. I would suspect that you don't get as hard of freezes as Michigan but then again I've not ever been in Arkansas before. Mine are currently in the belly of my Motorhome and currently sit on the west side so it gets direct sun for many hours and we've had a few days recently of mid to upper 90's. The experts here won't steer you wrong. Again welcome from Michigan Kelly

Jasoninsd This cracked me up! π The more I read on here, the more I think I've found my people! lucyYou can tag people using @ then their name which you can get off their profile or touch their name and that will also take you to their profile. jasoninsd will keep you in stitches. Lol Yes Michigan is cold most years from Oct up to and sometimes including May but if you don't like it wait 15 minutes because most times it will change. We fashion Halloween costumes around snow suits and you can very easily feel all 4 seasons in 1 day. Lol.
