So I've been wanting a larger tumbler - the double HF 3 pounders just isn't making it for grinding.
The price seemed great, as any other tumbler that size is $$$, and hard for me to rationalize.
It came today & it seems like a pretty cool machine - it has an automatic reversing setting,
so you can set it to turn in one direction for awhile & then it stops and reverses direction.
And it will just keep doing that until you just turn it off.
It even came with an extra belt & o-ring.
It also has 5 speeds- although I think the lowest speed is probably fast enough.
Since I want it for grinding I think the speed is less of any issue- but I think it does look like to goes faster than my 3 pounder, but then I've never seen a 12 pounder in person.
The door design is quite interesting, it's fairly small in the center of the tumbler , with an o ring seal and a cam latch, in the center, than holds it closed.
I filled it 2/3rds with water & left it all day so far, with no leaks, so I'm cautiously optimistic.
I ordered some mixed rocks from the rock shed & I'm going to load it up and try it out.
I'll report back.

I forgot to add that I've feeling very guilty, as today is my husband Tom's birthday & wouldn't you know both the rock tumbler & the box of rocks come today- just my luck. But I'll get over it.
OTOH he ordered lots of parts for his minibike So I think we're even

I have looked at these several times. I just wonder how well the acrylic barrel will hold up? Please keep us posted!

Well it's actually supposed to be polycarbonate, but I don't expect it to stay clear for very long.
Too bad, as it's cool at this point watching the water slosh around in it at different speeds.
Maybe I'll put some food coloring in it.

I love the idea of having a reversing function as I feel the rocks can get into a Repeating Cycle that the reversing action should prevent. Also predicting a short & loud life for that barrel.

Awesome new toy Patty!! I'm stoked to read about the updates on that barrel! I love the concept of being able to seeing the tumble!

Thanks all, I think it's pretty cool & with any luck will work out.
First I'll say I'm NOT a tumbler, so it's not a machine I'm looking to use 24/7.
But the occasional tumble with the 3 pounder has gotten old.
Sorry jasoninsd, but Tom already informed me that the see through drum will be opaque pretty quick.
If I was doing this even semi pro I'd look at equipment pretty differently, but I'm just playing at all of this.
And the price was right.
We'll see- I'll report back.
The first problem I'm having is the mixed rocks I got from the Rock Shed are already culled for cabbing.
So I already need more tumbling rocks !
Thanks for looking,
Patty

If I were to get one, I would seriously think about just running the colored water (as you suggested) with nothing else...just to watch the "tumbling" action! LOL - Kinda the new version of a "lava lamp"!

So many moons ago when I was just a wee newbie tumbler My Model T barrel lid blew out (this was the old white lids from Thumler's). I only had this tumbler and so I crafted an acrylic lid (while I waited for a replacement to show up). A little Teflon tape (ok a lot of Teflon tape) stopped the leaks and I filled the barrel with grit and rocks and water. It stayed clear for a couple hours, but by the next morning the slurry really took away the view. It was cool while it lasted.

OK, because inquiring minds want to know. Here's the beast in action.
I started it for this video in my in-house studio, but since then I have moved it down below.
24 hours later & it's still going. I can still see into it & how the grit has become a slurry.
Fascinating to see the process.
I'll check back at the end of the week & see what's what.

It's a bit fast can you slow it down

Nope, that's the slowest speed.
It actually has 4 more faster speeds.
Since I'm wanting it for grinding, and plan to use my 3 pounders for polishing
I'm thinking it might be OK. We shall see.
I have read of others doing the grinding faster than norm.
