Throwing some color out to help brighten dark days. Here are some recent-ish fire magnetite/obsidian (time is all relative) highlights that felt worthy of some camera time, thanks for looking! Not sure why the YouTube videos aren't showing a preview, computers are dumb. IMG_4705 by Kevin, on Flickr blue by Kevin, on Flickr

I agree on the one in the first video, I keep stopping to stare at it every time I walk by it LOL. Those are super nice! And amazingly shiny! How did you polish them? Thank you! I did them on an 8" Cab King and a final polish with cerium oxide.

As always Kevin, your work with this material is stellar!
Mine has been waiting in the wings (read that as "pushed to the back" LOL) for quite some time now...maybe this was what I needed to put a FIRE under my arse to get it done! LOL

Fantastic cabs with an incredible polish! I have never gotten a good polish on obsidian. I see you used CO for the final polish. I was wondering what lap you used, leather, felt, other? Thanks.
Peace, Rich

I was talking to a seller from prineville out at the campground with stonemon and his advice for obsidian cabs was to take them to 600 on the diamond wheels. then cerium on wool carpet, if I recall. He wouldn't share the tumbling secret, sadly, his tumble was amazing. I have a red ribbon cab at home waiting for me to set up a carpet wheel, hope it works.

Thanks everyone! The rocks definitely deserve all the credit, I'm just giving them a bath Fantastic cabs with an incredible polish! I have never gotten a good polish on obsidian. I see you used CO for the final polish. I was wondering what lap you used, leather, felt, other? Thanks. Peace, Rich I'm using a hard felt wheel for most of my obsidian cabs. However, because the fire layers often undulate, sometimes I contour polish the cabs & specimens following the flow of the magnetite layer. The felt wheel can't reach the valleys in the contour polish so I will hand polish them with cerium oxide on a clean (new) leather chamois from the automotive aisle at the hardware store, which doesn't take very long at all if I've spent enough time on the 1200 wheel with a couple of quick passes on the 3k. I take the pieces I work on up through the 3k wheel, but the 1200 is where I focus most of my time. I've seen stones finished from 600 to cerium as Rockoonz mentioned, and they looked fine, but I think the polish I get has a much deeper look in my opinion. I'm far from an expert on anything, but my understanding is that cerium oxide doesn't really remove scratches as much as it kind of fills them in, so my thinking is that spending time on the higher grits yields a better result. Probably way more than you were looking for here, lol.

Very impressive - and beautiful! Such a variety of colors and patterns! Were these self-collected?
The first photo and the last video are my favorites. I don't think I've ever seen any nicer fire obsidian.

As a variety junkie, that variety of colors and patterns is what makes it so darn addictive!! LOL
