Here’s one of the first cabs I ever made. Although I’m not sure it’s a “cabochon” in the strictest sense- I made it 2-sided and will make a necklace that will allow the wearer to wear either side as the front. I have a couple more slabs from this particular rock and will attempt to make a at least 1 true cabochon out of it, but I’m really please with this one as it is. I have found lots of these types of rocks here in Northern Virginia but I don’t know what they are. There is a lot of Potomac Marble and dolomite/dolostone in the area, so it’s probably in that family. This particular rock is softer than quartz, but does take a decent polish, though not truly “shiny,” which actually works for it, IMHO. My husband named this one, “Chocolate Raspberry” which fits it perfectly.
