Since there are people here who are far more talented than myself when it comes to cabbing. I’d like to see some of your crazier more advanced cabs you’ve done on the wheels. I want to see what is possible and understand what techniques are used to obtain cuts, shapes, domes, etc..

Here's the craziest catochon I've made... Pretty insane. Done on wheels? I did the initial cutout on the 10" slab saw. Then I took a drill with a diamond wheel to do the initial grind - just to knock the edges off quicker. I did everything else on the 220-3000 wheels...

But for easier cutting on the wheels I read an article in Rock & Gem a couple of months ago by Bob Rush,
and he explained about calculating the diameter of your wheel & planning the shape around it for easier cutting.
For this months contest, with the narrow shape, I did just that with my Blue moon.
My Husband Tom calculated the radius of my 6" wheels & we used a compass to the radius I could easily grind
on the inside curve & then designed the shape around it.
It all depends on the size wheels of your unit.
For example on a Pixie with 4" wheels you could easily grind & polish a tighter inside curve.
The outside curve doesn't matter - you can grind any outside curve on any wheel.

That’s what I was thinking I might have to do, meaning invest in a pixie. I’m running a genie right now. With some of the ideas I have in my head for future cabs, not sure I’ll be able to do them on the genie.

Well it's either that or you set up a carving station to do smaller radius. That's what I'm in the process of doing.

Yep - we sold a Pixie we picked up not long after we got married. Have regretted that many times since then. The cab below was done on a Genie, with a flat back and a flat top for the cap. The cab sold before it was finished, so at least one person liked it.

Tahoma is a seam agate with the agate between the matrix. I had a Tahoma slab that had matrix between the seams like a big vug. The slab looked like an image of an Aztec crocodile; a Cipactli. I made a flat top cab and ground it to the shape. Unfortunately, the area where there were jaws was hollow and the bottom broke off so I ended up with a Cipactli with a sever over bite.

Thank you. This is the outside the box kind of thinking I’m talking about.

This cab isn't necessarily complex but the difficulty was having that full inside radius tight on the 6" wheels. I like how it turned out and hope to set it for MsAli one day

Here's a group shot of various sugarloaf , high dome, and bullet cabs I cut from various trnsparent/translucent materials: garnet, citrine, tourmaline, rose quartz and amethyst. They make nice ring stones and elements for other jewelry. I also did a bunch in lapis and a few other materials like blue chalcedony and Oregon sunstone, etc.
