I started tumbling some of the carnelian I got from Kingsley North. The material seemed really nice, clean, solid. Here is what I started with: Just a small option of the order. It went into the model B with a bunch of other agates, Jaspers, cherts, pet wood, you know typical tumbling goodies. After 2 weeks in the 60/90 it came out pretty beat up. Lots of fracturing, chipping spalls. I suspect that it is too rough of a neighborhood in the Model B. I pulled out a half dozen pieces that were ready for 120/220, and everything else went back in. I really hate the thought of having to run this apart from everything else, and I really don't have a 3Lb barrel dedicated to course only (I would have to use a 120/220 barrel- which is no big deal) and I don't really have the space right now to do a carnelian only run (I have 4 barrels worth of 500 ready stones that have to wait until I free up some space). I'm once again giving serious thought to a vibe, but there is a lot of OUT of STOCKS on the UV-10 (not sure I want to deal with a Lot-o at this point- they are out of stock as well anyway). I have been trolling ebay, marketplace, and craigslist, but not really thrilled with anything that has come up yet. SOrry for the rambling, just very let down with this tumble so far.

Please keep us posted as to your efforts and results. I too, have some cornelian and I am most interested in your procedure.

The waxy appearance suggest that the rock was cooked/heated to bring out the color. Flint knappers heat treat stone so that it will chip with less force, that might explain why it doesn’t seem to be holding up to the rest of the rocks in the batch. Carnelian is also often faked by heat treating sard (brown chalcedony) to oxidize the iron in it to a red color.

Sorry to hear it's not going well for you. My vibe died on me last month so I've been running all rotaries for a while. I'd recommend buying one, but I can't really afford a new one myself lol. -Nicholas
