Well...I have to say a big thank you to realrockhound and Bravura Cabochon Designs . They both created threads recently which made me want to push myself out of my comfort zone of familiar shapes. So, thank you both for the "nudge"!  As always, thanks for taking a gander. This is Deschutes Picture Jasper I got in a trade with holajonathan. The first picture shows the true colors, but the other two pictures show off the girdle on the two inside swoops even though the color of the cab is wrong.    These two pieces are Petrified Deschutes Oak...also sourced from Jonathan. To date, this is some of the best petrified wood I've worked! woodman , I'm tagging you.    This is another piece of Deschutes Picture Jasper. This is a small cab...but it has two inside swoops on the sides. This is a shape I drew out a couple weeks ago when I was messing around with the French Curves.  These are both Blue Biggs Picture Jasper...again from Jonathan. I loved the shape I had planned for that first one, but a pit came out of nowhere. So, I had to reshape the piece...which is one of my least favorite things to do! LOL The shield does have two minor inside swoops along the bottom...very minor.     This is Badlands Plate Chalcedony. I posted this in a different thread, but wanted to include it with my "challenging" cabs this week! LOL  |

Those are amazing jasoninsd! The Deschutes are my favorites. Where has holajonathan been on here? I haven't seen him around here lately. I've got a credit card thin slab of Biggs I'm debating what to do with. It's real spendy material so I'm gonna have to use it. Maybe guitar picks... -Nicholas |

If your slab is that thin...I'd consider backing it. Cross out "gardening" and add "cabbing" and that describes me during the majority of the year. Totally understand. I was thinking of making a doublette out of it... It's super thin so I don't know if I could get it sanded down enough to hold glue though. Funny side not, I just realized Ain't Vuggin Round was Jadedvision! Took me long enough lol. |

Well done! Biggs is some of the toughest jasper to grind, a durable rock like that is a great choice for challenging yourself with new shapes. Thanks Byron! This is the first time I've worked Biggs...and it won't be the last! LOL - You probably didn't know it...but thanks for the "push" on the new shapes. Stunning...just stunning. Thanks Dave! These actually were really fun to work on!! I love you've ventured out of your comfort zone & are doing new shapes.

I think there's a little more "concentration" required than a regular shape calls for...but it slows me down a little and makes me be a lot more careful. NOPE! It's not time for metalsmithing yet! LOL |

Yeah...I had to throw ONE teardrop in there! LOL - I searched Deschutes and Biggs cabochons on Google before I did these. I wanted to see how many were out there with "intricate" shapes. I didn't really see a lot at all...so I knew I wanted to have something different than what was out there already. I figured high-end material required high-end shapes! LOL |

The cabs might have been challenging, but they came out GORGEOUS!
Elegant shapes, beautiful patterns, the eyes don't get bored even a bit while watching them.
