Hi all!
My wife's working a conference in Denver next week, and I have a few days to see the sights and keep our 11 and 13 year olds occupied. I'd love to hunt smoky quartz or most anything else with a forum member or friend of one. It's probably best if we stay within 3 hours of Denver and below 10k(ish) feet- I don't know how the kids would react to high altitudes. We have our own equipment and able bodies, and we would make great apprentices to someone who wants to try a place or two but can't swing a pick or use a shovel quite the way that they used to. I'll be driving our AWD Honda Pilot.
Please send me a message if you're interested in this offer, or if you may know someone who is. I'll gladly send you my phone number and answer any questions that you have.
If you aren't interested but have any advice for us, I'm all ears! This will be my first time in Colorado outside of the Denver airport.

I’ve done really well for petrified wood on the south Platte river anywhere you can find access, getting out of town to some extent would probably help your odds. Possible that it’s city for miles, and there may be some unsavory characters along the river, but there may be some walking/biking trails with a lot of access. Another place we did really well was Devils Head pegmatite mining district. We used to bring home bucket loads of massive chunks of smoky quartz, and digging yielded really nice crystal plates with beautiful terminated crystals. Of course this was about 35 years ago, good luck I hope you get out and find some nice rocks. Sounds good! I didn't know about petrified wood on the south Platte river. I've heard about a smoky quartz area about a mile from the Platte and not too far from Devils Head. A combo trip might be fun. I've heard good things about the Devils Head/Topaz Pt area, but I have also heard that in the last few years a lot of claims have been filed in that area. I'd be eager to go with a local who knows the area, but leary of going by myself and accidentally hunting on someone's claim.

I don't know Colorado rockhounding but I'd be willing to bet there are a few gem and mineral clubs in the Denver area that you might be able to contact to see if they could suggest anyone to go hounding. Also if you are on that Fbook site, I know there are several rockhounding groups for Colorado.
