First I attempted to dome the dino bone but it undercut badly. So I flattened it on the flat lap and glued it to a quartz slab (courtesy of wpotterw) which I domed et voila!

What a great save. All I can think, is that I could only hope that my bones would agatize someday, in the very far future & look half as cool,
when some future cabber digs them up .

Good solution to save a pretty stone. It' sad that some beautiful gembone undercuts so badly.

Good solution to save a pretty stone. It' sad that some beautiful gembone undercuts so badly. Undercuting... you are right about that. I recently passed up buying some really colorful bone for just that reason. With this fix I will reconsider it in the future. One of my next projects will be to cap some pretty rhyolite that only takes a satin finish. I am hoping that is as successful!

While the treatment should be disclosed if selling, it really seals soft areas and brings out hidden color. It polishes very well if allowed to fully harden. Hxtal is expensive but a little goes a long way I've found.

I apply it to both sides of the slab before cabbing. It penetrates very deeply and one side might be enough but I do both for insurance.
