Found in SW Wisconsin deep into the driftless area. Area is mostly sedimentary material. Hardness ~6.5 non-magnetic Thanks for looking, Ken...

It's a giant mamallian molar! Ok maybe not but it was a fun thing to think of. But maybe so? Giant sloth or something would rock my socks.

The answer might be in the third picture where it looks like a chunk got knocked off the upper right hand corner. Is there a coral pattern uncovered there ?

There is a whiter layer above and below suggesting a deposited lamination. But the whiter layer wraps around the right side of the rock. A tricky one. Nice to see it sawn.

It could be a badly worn coral.

Took a closer look and I would agree this is some form of coral.
You all rock!

I see a very worn rock. However I see nothing to indicate that is organic in origin. Its spongey in one zone but nothing that would indicate the regular pattern that might reflect the hand of mother nature living beasties. Why not a big piece of chalcedony. Three good guesses make a consensus not a secure ID. Not trying to be contrary, just balancing the discussion.

Very cool but it kinda looks like a partially chewed petrified rawhide bone to me.
