ashley I know a lot of people do it but for safety’s sake I need to say something. Just a little heads up on shaping cabs with a saw blade. It works because the diamond sinter on the blade is just like a diamond grinding wheel. Saw blades are designed to cut with the circumferential part of the diamond sinter. They aren't designed for grinding on the kerf side. The dangerous part is that most rocks will cut through the softer steel core pretty quick. If you grind against the core, (which is very easy to do), it will cut through potentially exposing you to flying pieces of metal. I think jasoninsd has some photos of a blade that is very close to failing dangerously with the sintered part separating from the core. I’m not the best about wearing eye protection because I already wear glasses. If I were shaping with the side of a saw blade, I would wear a full face shield. You’re an important member of RTH and I would hate to see anyone hurt by pieces of metal flying off a rotating tool. Thanks for contributing so much here. Sincerely, Brent P.S. What templates are you using for your preforms? I like em. Good safety advice in bringing this up Brent! Here's a link to the thread about the blade: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/97223/lucky-goodAnd here's a link to the thread about doming a cab on the trim saw: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/97206/shaping-cabs-trim-crazy-updatedIf you're not careful as to how you use the kerf to shape...this is the kind of damage to the blade that can happen. That being said, I do believe if a person were cognizant of where the preform is making contact on the blade (keeping it on the actual diamonds, rather than the weaker "core"), then I believe this is a very useful way of saving time and wear on the diamond bits for the Dremal.

markbThat’s true Mark, your thinking! I could trace things. I did see that link, thank you. I didn’t know how straight I could cut the shapes out.

jasoninsdDo you think it was just the rough shaping of the cabs that messed up your blade or cutting the dome and shaping the dome that did the damage?

jasoninsdDo you think it was just the rough shaping of the cabs that messed up your blade or cutting the dome and shaping the dome that did the damage? I actually believe it was the way I was shaping them. I knew the preforms were rubbing against the core...but I didn't realize the damage that was being done. Now that I know, I'm careful to use just the diamond section...

ashley, I like the shapes! I've done the same thing over the last week or so with stuff for my grinder. I can't wait to see how they turn out. I'll bet they take an awesome polish. It's been too dang hot up here to do much rock stuff, so I'm kinda jealous (that, and I burned my dominant hand badly yesterday... ).

@perkin17 Thanks Nicholas! Sorry about your hand, how did that happen?! I may or may not have accidentally poured a bowl of fresh-off-the-stove water over my hand on my way to the table. I saved the bowl though!!!

Ashley, those look great! I can’t wait to see what kind of cabs you make out of them with the dremel! Or what your chickens are going to look like!
Either way, I’m pretty excited.
And good job!

perkins17 ouch! Hope it heals quickly for you. Thank you! I'm doing fine now, just hurt pretty bad the first day. My hands are back to being able to cab again so I'm happy.
