markbThank you Mark! Im nervous now. Got to figure out this whole dome thing with a dremel. We shall see how that goes! Otherwise they get shaped better and kept flat and just thrown in the lot o.

ashley I know a lot of people do it but for safety’s sake I need to say something. Just a little heads up on shaping cabs with a saw blade. It works because the diamond sinter on the blade is just like a diamond grinding wheel. Saw blades are designed to cut with the circumferential part of the diamond sinter. They aren't designed for grinding on the kerf side. The dangerous part is that most rocks will cut through the softer steel core pretty quick. If you grind against the core, (which is very easy to do), it will cut through potentially exposing you to flying pieces of metal. I think jasoninsd has some photos of a blade that is very close to failing dangerously with the sintered part separating from the core. I’m not the best about wearing eye protection because I already wear glasses. If I were shaping with the side of a saw blade, I would wear a full face shield. You’re an important member of RTH and I would hate to see anyone hurt by pieces of metal flying off a rotating tool. Thanks for contributing so much here. Sincerely, Brent P.S. What templates are you using for your preforms? I like em.

Who says you have to do cabs, or even start with them? Why not start with turtles, or chickens, cat faces or crosses, or other shapes? Maybe shape them, then Lotto them. Cabs could come later on. Now, there’s nothing wrong with cabs BUT anyone who could master grinding out a chicken would be pretty talented if you ask me. 🐓

Good start! I’m not sure what Starguy said about the sintered wheels, but I always wear safety glasses when using most electric tools. I also wear prescription glasses, but don’t want them scratched. Don’t overlook safety issues. Good luck with your cabs!

StarguyThank you Brent! Thats very kind of you. I always make sure I have on eye protection and lung protection. But a full face shield is a really good idea. I normally use the front of the blade to do the shaping, if that makes sense. I guess technically it would be the front of the blade and a tiny bit of the side. For the shapes I freehanded them all. For the circle I had a sticker laying around that I traced. I haven’t invested in any templates yet.
