I'm still stuck in fire obsidian mode, all of my other rocks are getting jealous! Thought I'd share a few recent favorites. The first one was a cool surprise when I went to randomly explore a piece, thought it looked like a fairy wing - the variety in this material kills me. Thanks for taking a look!

You're on fire with this material here!! (Couldn't resist! LOL)
That last one "Flames" is one of the "off the charts" examples!!
If you have cats...they must've been locked up while you were wiggling your hand under that material! LOL - That was a really genius move to rotate the pieces that way!

Well, it’s finally happened… you obviously went to another planet to get that indescribably beautiful and mind-blowing material!!! I would say it left me speechless but here I am… babbling on and on through the drool!🤣🤣🤣

Wow I'd be stuck on that fire obsidian if I had any too- unbelievable stuff.
I was going to tell you how much I liked the first 2, but the 3rd flame is indescribable.
Where does fire obsidian come from ?

No cats as Lucy, my German Shepherd, views them as hors d'oeuvres but she usually does a good job of filling in for them. Thankfully I was able to get the videos done without her nose in there. The lens cloth is mostly there so my wrecked digits don't distract from the stone and in case I need to buff a quick fingerprint out of the way I never get tired of these! That dancing flame is just soooo beautiful! you are the master. You're too kind, Tela, but thank you! Holy smokes, those are amazingly beautiful! Thank you, Robin! Thanks, Patty! It comes from Glass Buttes in Oregon, the only place it's been found so far as I know.

jasperfanatic care to share your grit/polish sequence? I have a red ribbon cab, basically right next door to the fire on Glass butte, and can't get rid of the haze on top of it. I got a tip in Prineville I plan to try, but I'm interested in seeing if your process is similar.

I got a tip in Prineville I plan to try, but I'm interested in seeing if your process is similar. Love the red ribbon! That fairy wing piece is technically red ribbon with fire. In a nutshell, I usually start on a 220 hard wheel to shape and get within about 3mm of the fire layer. From there it's 280 soft, 600 soft, a ton of time on the 1200, then a brief touch up on the 3K. Finally, I'm using super cerium oxide on a slow moving hard felt disc. I have a leather car wash chamois coated in cerium too that I'll use as a final hand polish sometimes, especially if polishing a piece where I've followed the fire layer contours, they cause concave spots that the hard felt wheel doesn't reach (neither does my leather wheel actually). Could probably hand polish every piece pretty quickly with that chamois if you spend enough time on the 1200. I've heard others approach it differently, but what I shared above has been the winning recipe for me. I won't show them publicly unless they're scratch free under a 10x loupe, and that process gets me there. Hope that helps! Did you talk to Emory at Prineville?

jasperfanatic I have talked with Emory on many occasions, but the guy with the suggestion was someone I met out at the campground while visiting with stonemon and his bride. He started with a different dealer at the show and ended up with Emory.

Rockoonz, That would have been Scott, jawsjr on the forum and youtube who shared a bit of his knowledge about polishing obsidian. He is a master at the tumble polishing of volcanic glass. He spotted my RTH shirt and introduced himself to us... Great conversation

He's a great guy, you can find him on Facebook (Coons Lapidary I think). I've been working from rough, not slabs. It's definitely tricky, light directional like labradorite but challenging in a different way.
