I’ve never used a Dremel to make a cab, but on my Genie I’ve made flat top cabs on purpose.
Sometimes the cab wants a flat top. That’s ok.

Actually, those look thick enough to dome. BUT, like Pat says, no dome is ok, too. I prefer a very low dome also called a buff top. Not quite flat.

You’re making cabs and having fun. All that really matters. When the time comes for the domes, I have faith you’ll nail it. Nice work.

ashleyI put a lot of flat preforms in the tumbler for shaping and polishing. They turn out nice. Occasionally they will get stuck to the side of the rotary.

Ashley, Here's a link that will hopefully help you understand "how" to make a dome. Look under the "Shaping" then "Peel the Apple" section. It shows a great visual. The diagram shows a great "side shot" of the cab. That first 45 degree cut goes all the way around the cab...then that's followed by that 60 degree cut that also goes all the way around the cab. Remember the bottom of that first 45 degree cut is the girdle line. www.gemsociety.org/article/lapidary-fundamentals-cabochon-cutting/

jasoninsdThank you Jason! I looked at that before Patty sent it. Then she sent it and then you did! I’ll take that as a sign I’m really suppose to look at it and learn from it! When researching domes that was the best site and detailed description I found. It was really helpful.
