Ok miket and liveoak how do you get a dome on a cab with a dremel?? I have never dremeled a cab except for the first cab I ever made before I had any equipment. That was many years ago, but if I were to do it again today, what I would do is draw a line around the preform where you want the girdle to be. Then start grinding from that line up to the middle of the cab in a curving motion. Do that all the way around and until you have it kind of domed. Then go to your finer grits to refine the shape and finally polish it. miket and liveoak will probably have better suggestions.

WOW, ashley , I'm not sure I have the answers for that, as I've never made a cab with a Dremel.
I am though in fact just setting up a flex shaft ( Dremel on steroids) to grind smaller cabs easier.
My first thinking on it is that the Dremel has to be stationary, no hand holding. So look for some kind of a clamp.
There has to be a water source - I actually just purchased a nice clamp on one from Kingsley North, that I added a mister head to.
After that it technically I would think works the same as making a cab on anything-
you have to grind multiple angles around the rock and then smooth them off to be round.
WOW- now that sounds easy, doesn't it - NO such luck !
One tip I've found will help you, is to draw on the slab.
So in other words- lets say you want to make a circle -
draw your circle, then draw ( sharpie or pencil) multiple circles maybe 1/8 - 3/16" apart,
(depends on the size of the circle you started with) until you have a smaller one filled in in the center.
This gives you a visual to grind to, so you're not just guessing .
Of course, you're also going to need diamond burs or small wheels to fit your Dremel.
To rough shape I found a little cheap kit at Harbor Freight, with 2 diamond wheels , 1/4" arbor & a small bur with an 1/8" shaft ( that would probably fit a dremel). This is a start- but you have to go through the grits to get any polish.
Here's a picture of my set up - obviously you'd have to figure out you're own water containment system - dry rock dust is not a good think, for either your diamond wheels or your body.
I'm sure Mike will have first hand info, since I believe that is what he does.

Ashley, go on youtube and find yourself a cabbing video. You will need to make the same kind of cuts to dome whether it be a grinder or a dremel.

Ok miket and liveoak how do you get a dome on a cab with a dremel?? Honestly, Ashley, I don't draw any lines. I never have. I don't measure the girdles and all of my cabs are free formed. That being said, you can probably tell! 😁 To dome, I just take the top down arond the edges of the cab to the thickness of the girdle, then work towards the middle, trying not to leave a flat spot on the top. If that doesn't make sense or if you have any questions, just let me know!

rockjunquieYour supposed to make certain cuts for a dome? What?! Oh how much I still have to learn! 🤦♀️ Thank you for the advice Tela, will do. I had watched a few on cabs with a dremel. Didnt think to watch one on making one with a cabbing machine. Side question: So is it still technically a cab if it has no dome?

ashley, here's an article that shows you the grinding angles you cut when making cabs. Maybe it will help.
