Thanks lucy! the agate was really pretty but has some tiny cracks that allowed polish to get inside the rock which takes away from the shine.

rockjunquieThank you Tela! It was not super easy but it was fun. Now I’m working on the whole dome thing. Maybe I’ll do something for the August cab contest.

Looks like a good starting point - look forward to see what you make with them.
Somehow I bet there's a cabber unit in your future.
Get watching the used stuff sales :-)

According to categories of competitive cab judging by AFMS rules, flat tops are also cabs, just another type. One way to deal with polish in cracks or "micropits" in the stone is to try an acidic solution and see if it will boil out. Even lemon juice or vinegar might work, an ultrasonic cleaner helps. Having trouble remembering what is the name for the acid we use for getting iron stains off of crystals, but it works really good for cerium, and probably other polishes.

RockoonzThanks Lee, thats good to know! Thanks for the suggestions I will give that a go. It’s a really pretty piece but that grit that’s trapped takes away from it.

Hey ashleyThe domeless cabs turned out good. I watch for those cracks while cleaning out coarse stage barrels. When I see them, I’ll set them aside. Cracks get hammered, or chiseled to remove them. Sometimes, I will try to clamp the slab in a vice and try to break it on the crack. I don’t always get all of the crack to go away but it’s usually better after treating them. If they’re small cracks or pits, I’ll sometimes spend some time grinding on them with the CabKing. It’s worth the effort if you can turn a so-so tumbled rock into a premium tumbled rock. Nice job on those.

I like that you are giving this a shot Ashley! The more you work on the cabs with a Dremel, the better you're going to get at it. I really do believe you're going to be able to figure the dome out!
