Cool rock. It sort of looks like Clear Creek plasma agate.

Man...if you were only three areas over from where you found it, I would say it was petrified prehistoric Alien dung! No clue on what it is...but it looks like a "mottled" jasper of sorts. I'm curious if Sabre52 or Bravura Cabochon Designs might recognize it. Whatever it is...it's gorgeous...and it's the second "yard rock" posted this week that really looked like something special!

All I could think was, no rock is safe anymore with that saw around ! No clue what it is, but it'll make some nice cabs.

This looks like a metamorphic rock containing a bunch of different minerals. I tend to steer clear of these, especially if those dark blue/black areas show any fibrous crystal structure as it may be crocidolite which is a form of asbestos. The blue could also be glaucophane or riebekite. I’d call it a pseudomorph of quartz after glaucophane, riebekite, or crocidolite with some other minerals mixed in there. When the rock was dry did the blue areas on the surface have a silky look? Your probably right. I don't notice any "silk" look on the outside of the rock, but the blue/grey areas just seem to react differently when you get water or oil on them. They just look like they could be fibrous. In the OP I said they kind of looked like small dendrites. Kind of fun to look up crocidolite and read that its the most dangerous mineral known to man. Proper precautions are being taken. Thanks so much for the info.

I have some Rainbow Ridge material that looks similar to that. Neat rock, can’t wait to see what you work it up into!

I don't say this to diminish your rock but yeah it's a common northern CA "Franciscan assemblage" tortured rock with a mishmash of colors and minerals. I call it dirty jasper because it's typically accompanied by a lot of hematite as I think I see in your last slice photo. I see a lot of this type of rock on the far northern area of the Franciscan - around Stony Creek/Burris Creek.
Once in a while you cut a piece and there is just wild stuff going on like in yours. Your second photo looks like it tried to be a poppy jasper but just had too much going on. As a point of reference Morgan Hill is only like 30 miles away as the crow flies.

Here's a piece from the same area that I've been holding on to for a while. Not quite as much action or hematite as yours but you can see similarities especially with your last slice photo.

Yeah Tommy, I can definitely see the similarity. Unfortunately this rock acts the opposite of typical and photographs better than it looks in real life. It's really dark. I don't take your comments as diminishing my rock. It's just something I found laying in a field. I would have never associated this with anything close to poppy jasper but what you're saying makes a lot of sense. I know a lot of rocks were hauled in and dumped in Area 54 but I doubt any were hauled very far. I knew it was closer than it seemed to Morgan Hill. When I was over at Clear Creek last time I thought about driving home the back way, through Mercey Hot Springs but thought better of it as it was getting too late. It doesn't look like anything else Ive found there (and I've got a bit of stuff from there) But I have found some other one offs too.
