The big question though . . . whose birthday would Bryan choose? Or would he choose the date of his favorite rock show? Or the date his favorite dog died? or . . .

Thanks guys! The picasso is the second piece from the rough that I tried - the previous piece broke at the color transition, I was amazed this one didn't. This time I did the drop test first.

My preferences lean toward softer stones, since I'm not very patient. I like turquoise, rhodochrosite, Welo Opals, and obsidian a lot, but also, all that stuff everybody mentioned above! It's hard to pick a favorite. Also, self-hounded stuff gets a huge boost up the list in terms of satisfaction-to-cab.
Edited to add: I can't believe I forgot my favorite, LABRADORITE! And Silver Sheet obsidian.
Any chatoyant stone to me is super fun.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like the pros don't use the paste, so I may need to be the guinea pig on this one. Paste solder. The price doesn't warrant its use, IMO. I'd have to increase the price of every sterling piece. I just clip my easy, medium or hard solder wire and it's just fine. That might be it right there, I'm sure it's more expensive. Makes sense.

I learned on paste and its great. You'll love it. It's just so much easier than pallions. It stays where you put it. No flux bubbling and running around all over the place. No pallions to jump off your piece. Use toothpicks to apply. It's perfect to learn on, and continue on! Stick soldering might be easier once you get the hang of it, but I haven't tried that.
Paste has a reputation among professionals of being something to use to repair jewelry, or something beginners use. Low brow. I keep asking them though, what about it makes it unsuitable for general fabrication? And none of them can come up with a good reason other than "that's not the way I learned". My jewelry teacher, who is a retired mechanical engineer, and for whom "that's not the way I learned" isn't a proper reason, uses paste exclusively.

Those are neat. I haven't managed to find a single fossil yet. If you get up to Southern Nevada I can show you where to find all sorts of fossil sponges and some other fossils. Would love to someday! I will put that on my "Let's try to figure it out" list!

Rhyolite it is I think. Shall we call it "Space Odyssy Rhyolite"? I'm hoping the seller has the rest of his stash at Q this year. I love how "in focus" (distinct not blurry) the orbs and lines are. It's amazing that with some rocks I get home and 6 months later say "What the heck was I thinking when I bought this??? It's full of fractures!" And then I'll pick up another one and say "What??? I only got one slab? Sob". Learned something new this thread - OJ is rhyolite. Did not know that - would have said agate but I see now that most of it is not agatized, although there seem to be a lot of the fancier pieces do have areas of clear agate.

Yup, I'm loving all of them but the blue (Lapis? Dumorterite? Azurite?) one is my favorite.
