Desert Gardens runs from 1/1 until the end of Pow Wow, pretty much. There are a few sellers left after that, but most pack up and start heading towards home or Tucson after Pow Wow.
That said, Desert Gardens doesn't get fully set up until like 1/3 or 1/4. I often go on 1/1 (but not this year) in order to get some of the "good stuff" that gets bought up. There's lots left to get all month though.
Once Pow Wow starts (Wed 1/15 this year), DG kind of dries up a bit - a lot of sellers move over to Pow Wow, or send a bunch of their stock over there and leave an assistant at DG to mind the store.
Overall, if it's your first time, just go during Pow Wow, and plan to hit (1) Pow Wow - need 2 days if you're a careful shopper, (2) Desert Gardens, and (3) a day for Tyson Wells and the miscellaneous little shows that pop up around town, as well as the couple of brick and mortar stores.
I'm only going during Pow Wow this year - much higher quality slabs there, and higher quality items like turquoise and variscite.

That is a stunner. I'm sure you'll make some beauties from that! You could maybe fill the voids with black epoxy?

Yeah, 1/4" or a hair thinner. Anything thicker and you're spending hours grinding it down, unless you are purposefully making a really high dome (like for a cat's eye effect).

Looking a lot better! Yeah I remember the thread. I'm with Opalrexia, round off that corner of the girdle. But more important, check the length of your longer dop sticks. With the Cab King, it's easy to get the dop stick to just the length where it can jam between the wheel and the front edge of the water tray. Just something to be aware of. Susan, Yes I took a couple different size sticks when I made these and had to shorten the length to allow for the Golf ball KNOB that I installed on them to allow better spinning turning of the Cab so I have the length correct for my system. All aluminum rods were cut to 5" the golf balls were drilled deep to only add a 1/2" to the Length. The Cabber plastic piece adds a 1/4" so total length is about 5 3/4". I removed the wrist rest because it just gets in the way. The first wheel on the left the 60 grit gets the most use and I sit to the left and work from the side and I am comfortable. Great. Sounds like you have it covered! Happy cabbing!

I have noticed that in Texas the eyes can deceive. Maybe closer to the sun...maybe dehydration. Don't worry. Lots more boxes to open. I hope so Craig! There's kind of a caffeine like high that you get, thinking each rock must surely be the Greatest Rock Ever Found!

Congratulations Susan! Gratitude for sharing the trip report! Some truly world class materials there. Wish I could've gone. Ha, well, hold off on the compliments for now Scott - I opened one box and cut open a lot of "Ewwww, what was I thinking? ?" rocks. Couple OK moss. A couple, out of an entire MFRB. Sigh. A few "not fully baked", but more that turned out to be baby puke or some shade of beige agate inside. The one with the row of red flower/plumes across the bottom? Peanut butter. Ugh. Can't wait to get to the "world class" ones! lol.

Thanks for taking us through that! I too need to dip my toes in the Hxtal/opticon pool, so seeing how to do the vacuum is helpful. That is such beautiful material, I know we're going to be seeing a ton of great cabs from it!
