I have had my QT66 and 3A for a year now so not exactly an Old Timer, but I think that 80 course grit works pretty good in the smaller Lortone 3A. Yes definitely a big difference between the 3 and 6 pound barrels.

Eight more days have gone by and another cleanout this morning. This glass seems a bit harder than other glass that I've tumbled before, but it is starting to have a good appealing look to it. Most of the bumps and lines that were molded into the glass have disappeared leaving a fairly smooth surface. I'm starting to get some interesting ideas about how to use the finished pieces in some lighting projects. Here are some pieces freshly washed off, still running in Course grit.

--- Got It --- I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of this box. So happy that I got bumped ahead in line at the last minute. Weighed it when I brought it in, was almost 24 pounds packed up. Don't have time to look at it today, doing lights and sound this weekend for the Broadway show "Million Dollar Quartet", but be assured that I'll look at this stuff closely by tomorrow afternoon. My tumbler will be happier this month. - Double Extra Good -

This was supposed to be the start of a "hobby" my wife and I could both enjoy......on a budget (which I have exceeded)......lol Anyway, like most of my hobbies, once I've gotten decent at it, cost always rises exponentially.......If I really ever get serious and come up with some disposable income, I'll purchase a horizontal lap and a decent size table top stone cutting saw........then try to find a place to put them and try to get a "return" on my investment.......lol After I bought 3 tumblers and 60 pounds of grit it was really cheap

Another week goes by and a cleanout happened on Sunday. Plenty of grit to recover in there. Glass is rounding down fairly well, seems a bit harder than the TV picture tubes and drinking glasses that I've tumbled before. It's reducing a lot, I have combined the 6 and 3 pound barrels together into the 6 pounder and added some more freshly broken glass to fill it up properly. Added extra slurry thickener this time to help the grit stick to everything. Some of the smaller pieces were getting too small to run for another week so I pulled out some of the more interesting bits to save for polish. Pictured here . . .

I think that pumice would work better as stage 3 prepolish. The stones you have now should only need a proper polishing. Clean the stones by tumbling them in plain water with a small amount of soap Then polish them, hopefully with plastic pellets for cushioning Use a real polish which would be extreamly fine AO Aluminum Oxide or CO Cerium Oxide or Tin Oxide

One of my best finds for glass was an old CRT TV picture tube. Must have been a 32 inch or larger and the glass was over 1/2 inch thick. The front had some bonds with some gray material that formed the back of the tube. It had been shot at by the Flint River here where I hound a lot.
Was driving down the street when I noticed some 1 inch thick glass broken up all over the median. Nearly had a wreck trying to pull over into the median to get some of it, but wasn't able to make it happen. The next day I drove though the area and it had already been cleaned up. That stuff looked like huge 1 inch diamonds laying there. Regret never getting any of it every time I go by there.

I pay $8.oo a month to Earthlink for 5 email addresses, they also include Webspace for each account. Yeah, it's not free, but it works perfectly with my Mozilla E-Mail.

I worked at a fireworks factory for years in the 80's and 90's. Can tell you that firecrackers don't contain Gunpowder, They contain Flash Powder which is much more active. It's a powdered metal plus an oxidizer. We made 4 different kinds of flash powder from the same 2 ingredients, the only difference was particle size. The smaller the particles, the stronger the reaction. The most powerful stuff was called Hyperflash and was made with 400 grit sized particles. A half a teaspoon would make a huge bang and cause damage without being contained at all, just a small pile on concrete.
We had a great time at that place and made experiments to play with every night they were open.
Fire in the hole . . .

I was told that our Dichroic color filters cost $200.oo each (when purchased 5 years ago) and we have 36 of them totaling $7200. Looked them up and todays prices are $130 each in the 6.7 inch size that we use. www.apollodesign.net/color-filters/dichroics/dichroic-filters/6-69-round-175-mmThese are handled very carefully and when they are removed from the lighting fixture, are slid into slots of a storage box. I think they are only 1/16 inch thick.

When I do Dicroic glass I put a layer or two about 1.5 inches wide and of course the thickness of the glass then a fiber rope and top it with clear. I cut the pendants about 3/4 of an inch after firing then back in the kiln to round off the cuts. Be hard to do with glass crumbles. In the stage lighting business we use colored acetate film (Gels) to color the light when needed. In recent times we have been using Dichroic glass instead of gels because it passes much more light and is more efficient. But the dichroic color filters are very expensive, so our theater only uses dichroics for the most common 4 colors Red, Blue, Green and Amber. In the short time that we have been using these filters, none of them have been broken so I don't have any to play with yet. They are quite interesting cause they change color with the angle that you look through them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dichroic_glass"A plate of dichroic glass can be fused with other glass in multiple firings. Due to variations in the firing process, individual results can never be exactly predicted, so each piece of fused dichroic glass is unique.[7] Over 45 colours of dichroic coatings are available to be placed on any glass substrate."
