The double claws are awesome. I can see why he likes them all. I didn't like or cut much turquoise for a long time. Now I'm in love with it also. It cuts efortlessly and people like it. Thank you! I don't know why I have been hesitant to cut any, but I really did like the result and it wasn't any more difficult that anything else I have cut, actually I only took it to 3,000 and was happy with the result.

Really nice job and very tribal & manly looking! You should be really proud of those! Thanks Ali! That is exactly the look I was going for so it's nice to have you say that.

A guy that I went through gradeschool and highschool with got in touch with me recently and asked if I could set some bear claws and elk ivories because he had seen some of the work I did in the past with pendants. I was reluctant at first since I'm a want to-be-lapidary, and only marginal smith, and teeth and claws were really outside my realm, but I went ahead and said ok. But, I told him I wanted to incorporate a stone in each piece to be true to myself. It's been a fun little after work project for me, stretching what I normally do. He wanted rugged stuff for the most part, so I purposely left scratches and didn't close the bezels as nicely as I usually do. And I got to play more with my texture hammers and oxidizing methods. But all in all, I'm really happy with what I have done so far and he is really happy! I just thought I'd share some pix here. elk ivory with small turquoise cab...I hadn't played with turquoise before...I will do more! some double claw pendants with chrysocolla single claw with a few small bits of turquoise single claw with a bit of petrified wood

Here's mine, in under the wire . . . A bit of crazy lace. Ended up looking a bit like dirty snow however. Forgot to take a size reference piece - it's about the size of a quarter. Anyway, here it is: Slab: Preform: Cab: That one is beautiful too!! Such nice cabs this month.

Decided to enter. Even though most of the water and sewer pipes in my house are now frozen. Please bear with me here. Calling this the Spirit of Winter. The Spirit captured when the first thaw of spring arrives. Was unable to do a Borax cleaning in tumbler, but soaked in Borax and used a toothbrush to remove as much polish as I could. There are lots of crystals in this which I did not want to destroy. Many areas which look like remaining polish are crystals. Method used was with Dremel, hand tools and rotary tumbler. Preform after some shaping with Dremel. spirit Size reference. 1 spirit Entry. 2 spiritI love this freeform cab. One of my best. It's fantastic!!

rivarat I should have simply said that I was planning to use a birthstone for some color in the piece I was making for this person and I feel like I hijacked your thread with my ring project and I'm sorry about that. I'll look forward to seeing what you put together!

Rings take a lot of abuse. I would really worry about the resin. I would try to talk her into a pendant, or a doublet with a quartz cap. I agree. I tried to talk her in to a pendant but she has her heart set on a ring. I hadn't thought of a doublet...that's a really good suggestion.

A ring would be nice, but I don't think it will hold up to wear. I like opalpyrexia's idea. Maybe you could ask about using a colored bezel cup to introduce some color? I have some of both of my parents ashes and have considered something doing similar to this for each of us kids. Maybe a colored bezel would be a good way to go... and opalpyrexia 's idea is a really good one I think.

I like it. Looks like a high silica dendritic limestone to me. At the Lambert Rch in San Saba Texas, most the crinoidal limestone is pretty hard but in some areas, the limestone is opalized and is even harder. Thinking what you have may be a harder limestone heavily impregnated with silica. Usually, that happens when the limestone is overlaid with silaceous diatomaceous or sponge spicule deposits....Mel That is fantastic insight Mel and I appreciate it. I will pass this on to him.
