I just found this forum through a search today. It's full of good information, almost to the point of being overwhelming. I was trying to find a replacement drive gear for my vintage Sears rock tumbler that exploded last night. My kids are trying to polish some of the Petosky stones they found at the beach last summer (thus my reply to this thread). It's been a 3 generation family tradition to hand polish stones around the campfire during trips to Lake Michigan so I have gotten hooked on these stones. I was hoping to use the tumbler to round off rougher stones and improve the shapes even if the final step involves wet sanding by hand.
My 2 questions are: 1) Does anyone know where to find replacement parts for the Sears 6-lb 861.14171 tumbler? I broke the drive gear. 2) Is anyone interested in selling or trading me a reasonable tumbler? I have a bunch of Petosky stones. I could fill up a couple of those fixed-price USPS boxes and send them to you in exchange.
I tried to insert a picture of a stone we polished but I failed at that too. Anyways, it was interesting reading about everyone's progress with polishing Petosky Stones.
