Found this somewhere in Michigan. Most likely along Lake Superior; probably near Muskellonge Lake. It reminds me of obsidian but the spots where there's small chips look rough, would expect it to be smooth. As you can see, it has very bright red markings in a black matrix. The fractures show that the color is not just on the surface.

Wondering how hard it is. From the look of the cracks it doesn't look like obsidian or jasper. Nice find!

I can't help ID except to say that it has the look of flame agate. But, I doubt it is. It's very pretty whatever it is.

Just a follow up. The stone is about 1" in diameter. Weighs 24 grams or about.85 ounces. For its size it feels heavy. I'm sure it was found along Lake Superior near Grand Marais. There wasn't any visible fracturing until I (I was a newbie) tried to run it in corn cob media and polish, but the tumbler I tried isn't made for rocks and I got a lot of chips and fractures.

Looks like tumbled jasper to me. However I’m not overly familiar with the rocks in your neck of the woods

I've thought about this a bit more. I know that iron ore production has been a major part of the Upper Peninsula's history. The iron gives a lot of stones up there red colors. I tried a magnet and sure enough, a magnet is attracted to it. Maybe at some point, the iron ore was processed nearby in the area and this could be slag? That's my latest guess. 🤔
