I found a rock that was <3shaped. It was pretty cool! So I started looking more closely and found many that just needed a little grind to be a heart. That's how I got started grinding rocks
What peculiar shapes have you found?

Shapes generally arent what catch my eye. Its usually patterns. Sometimes a creepy face or a pretty scene will pop out at you. We have a thread somewhere that shows different pictures that people have found in rocks. Hmmm, cant remember where its at.

Being an Xtreme Rockhound, but having limited wide-range knowledge for "proper" identification, I often hound by walking slowly through desert areas with lots of rocks (especially washes), carefully focusing in a "sweeping arc" in front of me. I look at almost every rock, watching for recognition, patterns, colors, transparency, glittering ... just about any indicator that a stone might be "good". If something catches my eye, I pick it up for closer overall examination, and if it looks like it may have possibility, it goes in my pack. This method has gotten me a LOT of nice, unusual stones ... but it does yield a fair amount of "clunkers", too. Probably the least thing I'm looking for is the actual shape of stones, as it usually has little to do with whether the stone is any good or not.

I've found one heart shaped rock, a smoky quartz, in my outings. Saving it for when I get a cab machine to clean it up.

Thanks for the comment everybody! Really appreciate it! I'm a little embarassed to post this. But I was so proud of myself a year ago when I started this. This hobby as been evolving for me so a history is a history. This is some of the first heart shape rock I found. A little imagination might be needed and these are some of the 1st I ground then I started getting somewhat of a clue there just landscape sedimentary rocks.--- maybe i am a pepple picker --- and this is silly but I was spraying them with laquer to bring out a shine but now I got few good rocks and am working them

Does this mean we are Pebble Pickers, or Rock Monsters.

Thanks Jo for the ‘contrasting half’ comment! Hearts can be like that and I hadn’t thought of it that way. It’s a technique I’m experimenting with and I’ve had some minor success. The grinding of a straight 90 degree flat on two rocks needs some improvement. But rocks seem to naturally want to go together! I swear that the few I’ve been successful with… well… the ½’s exchange atoms or something. Because different shades of hues or transparency show up in the other ½’s that wasn’t there before. Say between a piece of jasper--- an a piece of agate epoxied together. Of course, I might be seeing things. If I can get some worthy ones made I'll post some pics. I'm just a little ahead of you. I just got my cabbing machine set-up and there still lots to do still. But how about you? How about you post a pic of your heart shape smoky quartz?

Yeah, MJ and URH, I have to say the same thing... I tend to pick what seems hard, has interesting color, and pattern. Then I'll cut into it to see what I got. But, sometimes, I do see some interesting natural shapes. See lots of "almosts" (arrowheads that aren't arrowheads). I do end up with some clunkers. They are helping fill out the borders for my gardens, LOL. Here's a pic of the natural heart that I found. Sorry it's not cleaned up.

Dang Maryann! That does look like a real heart. A real heart that was in need of lipator or something. I'm very glad Ralph is better, I would have saved that rock also. Tigger

Thanks for sharing the pic of you first hearts. I think they are so cool cause it's what started you on the hobby. Your hearts in the second pic are awesome. I personally don't care what kind of rock I find as long as it has neat color and pattern, I hang on to it.
Mary ann, that is a wicked cool heart.

wow [glow=red,2,300]stonesthatrock[/glow] I hope your friend is doing well. Thats quite a true heart rock shape!
Thanks [glow=blue,2,300]sitnwrap !! [/glow]
landscape rocks have more potential then people give them credit for. The Cherry Creek 1/2" rocks are very cool. They don't buff well obviously... but my spray laquer trick brought out a nice shine. I made quite a few and handed them out. Some put them in planters, other on there p.c.'s, put magnets on some and stuck them on refrigerator ect. one person put them in their scrapbook.

This really is a great find Jo! It will clean and buff up nicely. Its a keeper for sure! And Steve your web page is rock'n! I enjoyed it & dig Utah. What little I been there. Mostly CanyonLands. The four corner states are`a geographical wonder. Your cabs are excellent and that Morrisonite caught my sight. [glow=lime,2,300]Eye in the sky [/glow]stuff !!
