Very cool cabs! Boy ya know I could just kick myself! When I was a kid in the Bay area there was a huge auto paintshop nearby where they did all that metalflake and candy apple type paint on hotrod and cycle parts. They used to have a big pile of stalactite type paintcicles chipped from the paint racks that us kids used to have whole boxes of just cause they looked cool. Plus we liked to hang out around there because a pro wrestler owned part of the business and used to come out an yell "pencilnecks!" at all us kids and try to chase us off *L*. Man those paintcicles would have been real cool polished when sawed in cross sections....Mel

I love it!! We were at our last rock show and some lady had bins of slabs and I pulled up a 2x3 inch piece of fordite marked $1 and Tony almost died, well didn't he find 2 more pieces, each marked $1! That stuff is so expensive, I am scared t cab it. You got some gorgeous patterns there, nice work!!!! Is it messy on the cab machine?

Geoff, this stuff is awesome, and you worked it up real good too! My daughter Abby keeps asking about this stuff. I have a rock show in a few weeks locally, hopefully I can find some. I've also thougth of "hounding" at the local auto body shops LOL!

Thanks you guys!
Shan, I don't care for man-made stuff, at least it's orig. and not made to be like something else.
Amber, It's a fairly clean grinding, smells like a body shop and has lots of metallic flakes in the water. I just go to my 280 wheel then onto 600 SC sandpaper, 1500 SC paper then auto wax. Nice that you couls score some that cheap.
Mel, that sounds like good ole' times. I bet that stuff would look awesome.
Good luck at the show Nate.

Beautiful! All of them, but my absolute favorite is the one in the top center in the first group photo.

Nice pieces. I am fortunate to have a freind who works for a packaging company that palletizes truck cabs for Freightliner. They show up on the rolling racks that they are painted on. He was able to get me a nice bag of Truckite, or is it Semite?

You have some with pretty colors there and you did a nice job with them. I've only cabbed one tiny piece so far but it seems easy to work. Didn't notice the smell but I was wet grinding.

Super nice! That wonderful Daniel sent me some a few years back, but I could never get a shine on it...I need to go back to it again. I love that stuff. T

Great job on those. That is some funky looking material. I almost bought some this past weekend at a Rock and Gem show.

Too cool. Looks like it's fun to work with too. My neighbor says she has an uncle who has some. She says he used to sell it back in the 70's or 80's, as it was big back then. You did a great job on it!

The big auto manufactures have changed their paint processes to electrostatically attach the paint to the car so there is virtually no paint over spray. So if you see Fordite in the rough buy it if you can afford it because there isn't anymore being created. Except as noted previously by Lee about his buddy having access to some from truck painting.

I don't know how I overlooked these before! Beautiful job on a funky but tough material! I like how they all turned out! What kind of grit level did you have to take them to? Fran

That is some crazy stuff. Some looks like botswana - except for the color of course.

Thanks everybody! I took them to the 280 wheel on my Genie then I hand sanded with wet/dry sandpaper (wet), starting with 600 then going to 1500 and a final coat of car wax. The wax gives a satin sheen. I will try going to 2000 sandpaper or higher before the coat of wax.
