Here is my very first cab. I don't know why I chose a triangle but it just seemed like the right thing to do. I live in an area that doesn't have a lot of lapidary interest so I've learned 100% of this hobby from this board. Everything from tumbling to polishing. Please let me know what you think...even if it is bad.

I feel you. I got the same problem. No-one around to learn from, So the boards/forums are an excellent way to learn from as there are so many people here with the knowledge and willingness to share.
Nothing to worry about in regards to your cab. You got very nice geometry, lovely color and layout. Now you will have to go for trail and error on the finishes. Every material finishes up slightly different to give it the special shine.
Greetings and keep going, Kurt

I agree with Mike on that one. Often if you just sit and look at the patterns in a slab, the slab itself will tell you what shape it wants to be. When I first got started in this hobby, (many moons ago), I thought everything had to be cut to calibrated shapes and sizes. It took me a long time to listen to what the slab was telling me. Glad to see that you jumped right in and tried a non standard shape.

Beautiful job! I'm not qualified to opine yet as I'm just starting out too, but the stone is beautiful and the workmanship looks pretty great too!

Those corners are always hard to keep from sanding down too far, and you kept it in check. The dome looks even, and the polish looks really good. Nice 1st cab, I'd say you did a fantastic job. Nate

Thanks everybody! I really appreciate the comments.
kk, I have learned the bare minimum on finishes but am learning quickly!
Randy, I have a couple of machines...one is an old 8" Crown that has four stations (I am only using two for rough grinding) and then I go to an ancient 3 station 6" homemade machine that looks like a homemade machine. I figure the Crown will last me a lifetime as soon as I add a couple of expandos or diamond wheels.

Looks like you did a top-notch cab on your first go at it. Looks like we have a natural here gang!

Don't worry Scott, as said in quite a few replies, the fun is in experimenting. Just keep trying, shapes come and go, and let your intuition guide you. I hardly ever finish something in the exact shape that I start out with. Its much more fun that way, than keeping to a given regimen.
