I thought that this was probably one of the best places to ask around...
I am looking to purchase a nice example of Deshutes Jasper. Rough only and the bigger the better. I know its becoming harder to find and this is why I am asking for the help. No slabs please. Looking for a nice display, not to cut it up. Any links or help would be great.

thanks for the fast replies
fwfranklen thanks for that very valuable information. Ill make that phone call.
I dont really know what a bigger piece sells for. If you have one in mind just name your price. At most a polished face would be alright. All Ive really been able to find is slices.

So much of the nicer Biggs or Rufus picture jasper is passed off as Deshutes. So make sure your getting what you want. This is the Deshutes I got from Judy Elkins the only slab I have left. If you look real close you can see an old man in the picture...or at least I can. Mike

I've got to spend more time cropping these pictures...I guess I do that in photobucket?

I see the old man! Nice opalized piece.
I was just at Elkins last weekend and can confirm that there were no rough chunks of any quality (just a very few that had no scenes or interesting patterns and fractures). She had about a dozen chunks with polished faces left, anywhere from $50 to $400 each (depending on size and quality), and several 12x20 flats containing slabs (both polished and unpolished). Some of the items are very sparse (including those piles shown on that pebblepup link). If you find a piece of rough, figure on paying $20 per pound and up. Remaining slabs are going anywhere from $10 to $300 each (depends on size, quality, pattern and color).
Her hours are limited, though she'll be open through Labor Day and finally closing sometime after that (might last through September).

When you say "finally" you mean for the season or forever?

deb193redux, thanks for that link. Thats a nice looking piece. I might have to slip me in a bid on that one.
rock2dust, also thanks for that information about the shop. First hand information. Bummer that it will be closing for good.
I figured this would be the best spot to ask around and it has been.
Love this place.

well i just got off the phone with Judy. Sounds like a very nice lady.
anyways, she said shes all out of the Deschutes Jasper rough but has slabs available.
I came across some pics on gemaddicts that rock2dust had of the shop and whats left. Very interesting photos. I would of loved to get one of those big Deschutes that he took pictures off. Guess they all got sold or saved for locals.

yes I seen those. Heres the link. gemaddicts.com/forums/index.php/topic,1426.15.html I live far kinda far away(Troy, Illinois, near St Louis) from Oregon and thanks to rock2dust, I get an insight on what her shop looks like. I think its great that someone actually photographed the shop and the items that are for sale. Very cool of you.

Yes, it is. I don't know where visiting rockhounds are going to go for suggested dig sites and ID's once the shop shuts down. One of the few always accessible experts on NW gem rocks. Still, I can hardly blame her for deciding to retire.

Bet Tony (Catmandewe) above has what you're looking for... he's the one mentioned in your first link about the chunks I think:P.
