I'll let the pictures do most of the talking here. I was at Quartzsite from 1/1 thru 1/4, 2014. These pics are mostly from Desert Gardens.
The sellers at DG this year were a bunch of slackers -- one or two early birds opened at 9, but most of them didn't uncover the rocks till 10:30. Daylight wasted! And then they covered the rocks up promptly at 5pm! Argh! I wasn't done shopping yet!!! JK. Actually it was slightly annoying but I got over it as soon as I got to the slab buckets.
First of all, the town of Quartzsite is a rather surreal place. It's not just about rocks. It's about hippies, and garage sales and RVs parked off in the desert by the side of the road. You see things like this:
and this
Once you make it to Heaven (I mean, Desert Gardens) you see this:
Booths:
Tony's (Catmandewe's) booth first of course:
Part of his Amy Sage stash:
Tony (left) and ? (right - Dude owns a beatiful big white dog):
Then JohnJSGems's booth (By the way he doesn't wake up until 10:15 am, ahem):
Other booths:
Look at the beige tub at the edge of the table - it says "FORDITE SLABS" (!!!!!)
Chrysocolla and Chalconsite (? Christopher had a different name for it like Conchalsite or something) was what all the sellers were going out and hounding and you saw little piles of it on everybody's table. Some are selling it as Chrysocolla with specular hematite. It's pretty.
The Australians always bring a bunch of eye candy:
Barrels of rough:
I did well this year in limiting myself to slabs, unless the material was only available in rough.
Here's a bit I did get: Indian Blanket Jasper from Utah.
They have some things for sale at Desert Gardens which are not rocks:
Expensive collector glassware (I think - it WAS expensive):
One guy was selling good quality base metal findings:
Shiny pretty things to tempt you (or your spouse):
Bismuth crystals:
Opals (most of the Mexican opal dealers hadn't arrived yet):
Crystals:
This shiny pretty thing actually looked useful:
And I got to meet Wampidy in person!
Christopher was busy showing blue rocks around:
I guess I missed HarryZ, Rockhobbit and Socalagatehound (although we're usually following each other from slab bucket to slab bucket at all the shows, so not sure what happened there!)
New Friends:
Q is a dog friendly place:
I actually took a pic of the vendor list this time:
Bigger version is here in case that won't zoom when you click it:
Vendor List
Hope you enjoyed your virtual trip to Desert Gardens! Will post pics of some of my haul once I unload the car.
