"There is a theory that claims a gulf of Mexico impact pushed the coral I find up on the center ridge of Florida." I believe that wave was what tumbled up piles of dinosaurs in Dinosaur National Park in northeastern Utah. I'm sure there was some spray in every direction. If I'm remembering correctly, Serpent Mound was believed to be Indian seashell kitchen garbage for hundreds of years, but was recently proven to be an impact crater rim.

Gulf is an impact effected crater...

Sorry James, I was referring to the 64.98 ± 0.05 Ma * Chicxulub, Yucatan, Mexico 150 km, N 21° 20', W 89° 30' 2nd largest egghead recognized impact crater on earth! impact. The Gulf of Mexico itself as impact crater. Hmmm. I'm a long way from getting there on "The Dying Times," but it is doubtful. On Geology reconstruction maps the first glimpse of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico as a small dot appears about 180 million years ago. The gulf continues to open and expand with Florida and Yucatan (the latter slowly moving southeast from Texas -Louisiana) still in contact 130 million years ago. I still have to upload the images for that period to photobucket.

The experts are pretty certain the gulf was tectonic and not impact. Darn. Was wanting some excitement. I see that Chicxulub impact. I will study that one for my impact science satisfaction. My neighbor passed this year. He was a dear friend. He tried to buy a soft ball sized meteorite from the lady who had the field it put a 50 foot crater in. For $500 about 50 years ago. I wish I got the location of the impact. Hoping for another to hit close by, that one less than a mile from the crib.

If the Lord had wanted you to have a meteorite, He would have put one in your back yard. Perhaps He did. Have you built a Meteorite Guys contraption and checked? I guess the same goes for obsidian. You weren't meant to fight that fight. 20 years ago a friend of mine was in a bar with a bunch of bruisers that tried to pester him. he said: They backed down. They don't come any more dangerous than a guy with nothing to lose.

They don't come any more dangerous than a guy with nothing to lose. The young man that works for me had to do a little stint in prison. He said the 'old school' guys were the dangerous ones. The old guys that no longer cared which way what went. They were the dangerous ones, that they succeeded in making life miserable for whomever messed with them. I guess it is the same philosophy as your mention. Let's hope we avoid such predicaments. I think about a chunk of near metal that is 1000 feet in diameter going 20K MPH hitting Wetumpka Alabama. An impact 5 miles across. I have not researched Chicxulub. it was apparently a real monster. 5 miles or 50 feet, coming from space at such a speed is unfathomable. A cool subject.

If you really want to get into that subject, the best I've found is: Impact Cratering a geologic Process - by H. J. Melosh. $83 hard cover at Amazon.com GASP! I just searched ABE Books. I think I paid $20 for mine.

Thanks Dave. An over the top subject, right out of a Sci-fi novel in real life.
