Some friends of mine asked me...
I said I would get back to them.
So... Why Quartzsite, AZ?

Largest outdoor rock show in the country. Used to be pretty awesome but now the traffic is awful and the dang flea marketers have taken over too much of the area. IMHO not nearly as good as it used to be but still fun if you can stand the traffic. Last time I went, I only stayed one day as the traffic jambs made it almost impossible to park or visit the shows other than Desert Gardens which was kind of on the outskirts.....Mel

Haven't been there yet and probably won't either! I can't stand being around a bunch of people-even family or friends..(Hate cities) Been that way forever..LOL I like it that way too.... I hear and have been told, that it's a hot spot for buying rocks though.....Who knows, maybe some day...

Traffic is only bad the first few days of the Big Tent. Which is a RV sales thing. I went to the Big Tent last year and it's mostly folks selling infomercial type stuff. I was disappointed because I wanted to see what RVERS use that makes life better and instead saw a lot of, well stuff! LOL. Quartzsite also has the largest Gem and Lapidary school in the world!!! It's run and taught by volunteers and costs $3 per half day!!! That's cheap and applies to classes or just to use their shops! I teach a Hillbilly Wire Twisting class there. It's a form of Cold Forge Wire Wrapping. You cannot see it all in a week much less a day!

Its a great place to go for rough and if you go midweek the people arent as bad . Depending on what your looking for IMO Desert Gardens is the best place for rock , as in rough and slabs . catmando has a very nice setup there .

We are wondering what ElNino will do to that area this winter, seems to have a pretty good start. Then too, the weather maps on T.V. show it all ending right at the CA/AZ border.

Stage manager says, "Exit stage left" - I go right and into the shadows. PTSD Thank you for all the responses. I am nearly overwhelmed.

Pretty nuts! what with all the mud and monsoonal rains... Yikes! Wouldn't it be weird if southern AZ and CA became lush and subtropical with yearly torrential monsoon rains...

I've been going since 2011. I've never seen the crowds or traffic jams mentioned by some. Trips to Quartzite have included meeting & rockhounding with many people from this forum, & buying a lot of rough & slabs. Go! Enjoy it. Lynn

To me, Quartzite is Tony, both Rockpickers, Orum, Diane, and flattireite. All but one are the best you will ever see.

I can relate with the PTSD and crowds . you want to do Quartzsite rather than Tucson as far as the crowds go .

I can relate with the PTSD and crowds . you want to do Quartzsite rather than Tucson as far as the crowds go . I didn't even know about the PTSD thing for years. One day, back in the early 90's, my band opened for a band called Primus. I had to watch them from behind backstage. I tried at our table. Nope. GET ME THE F*** out a here NOW!!! My BP went through the roof. I was dripping with cold sweet and having full body temors of near siezure intensity. My drummer's girl have me blue valium. I missed their opening set(roughly 40-45th min). I was stunned. PTSD wasn't excepted yet. Docs back then called battle fatigue or shell shock.

Because if you like rocks then Quartzsite is more fun than you are legally allowed to have!
The show technically runs from Jan 1 to Feb 10, if you want to miss the crowds go the first two weeks or the last two weeks. The first two weeks you get to pick through the new rough, the last two weeks you can make some hellacious deals.
If you come stop by and see me at Desert Gardens show, spaces A22 B22, east end of the front row right next to the Diamond Pacific building.
I am also hosting a BBQ at my booth on Jan 23, you will get to meet lots of great rock people if you can put up with the traffic and the crowds that weekend. Everyone is invited! I will provide the hamburgers and hotdogs, bring a potluck dish of your choice to share.
Hope to see ya there! Tony
