Why Quartzsite ? WHY QUARTZSITE ? You like rocks, and yet you ask "Why Quartzsite"? Every rockahaulic should do Quartzsite at least a couple of times in their lifetime. More rocks & rock people than you can shake a stick at. Rocks you've never seen before. Rock names you can't even pronounce. And if you happen to like minerals or fossils, pure heaven. Just bring plenty of money or you'll be going home early. Oh, & have overload springs installed in your car or truck. Get to know the local rock clubs while you're there, and tag along on a few of their hounding trips. Great people with access to private, club owned dig sites.

Why Quartzite? It's fun!
Then you can go on to Tucson. MUCH bigger, and fun also.

For someone who has never been, you have to go at least once in your lifetime. I can't say when I was first there, but I have digital photos on my computer every year from 2003 to 2015, with the exception of 2007. Don't know what happened that year??
Every year, there are numerous threads here on RTH about preparing for Quartzsite, going to Quartzsite, and after Quartzsite.
I know there are more threads (you can search for them using Google!), but here are four links I came up with to take you there. Two of these threads include the BBQs catmandewe puts on (You ROCK, Tony!), one is of a rock hunt in Brenda, and one is just a bunch of pics I have taken at Q over the years. Should give you an idea of what it is about.
It has gotten a lot bigger over the years, but a lot of the shows are no longer there. Clouds was a great rock buying show that is gone now. I think the political climate in Q may have something to do with some of the shows leaving...
Anyway, enjoy! Jean
ETA - Oops, how 'bout I add the links? DOH!

Quartzite was more than I expected and well worth the drive. 1. I met some of the folks that go with usernames on this board. 2. I was able to get a real (not stealth) campsite which was close to the Desert Garden folks (on short notice). 3. You could avoid the crowds if you wanted to do so (i.e. come early, leave early or later or stay the night and party. 4. You get to educate yourself, talk to some characters, and indulge in rocks you've never seen or had access to before. Tony's party was cool and appreciated. Tom

Here's another link you may like:
forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/63636/quartzsite-2014-trip-report-millions
This is a trip report from Bluesky78987 Susan from a year ago, posted on Jan 5, 2014. A great trip report, and the pics really give you a good idea "what it is all about." She went early, a couple weeks before most of us. I'd say if you only have a week, you want to go the week that coincides with the Pow Wow (Wed Jan 20 - Sun Jan 24, 2016). That is unless you are wanting to go to the car and RV shows.
The RTH BBQ in Tony's space is Sat Jan 23, 2016. Some of us normally get together for a field trip the day before. At this point in time, still not sure if we'll be making it in 2016 or not. At least, not for the full week, maybe just for that last weekend. (Crossing fingers)

Quartzite is wrapping down, go to Tucson and hit Kino ball park, some good deals this year. The Pueblo show is out of control, all prices are in Grams or karats.
But, do visit Tony on way out. :-)

mrzulu I have seen a lot of interesting answers but none that answered your first question, Why Quartzite? Before I found my first agate there were prople with campers that went to AZ for the winter many of those were snow birds from the northern midwest (MN, WI and MI). They went to avoid the cold temps and camp out on government land for free. They went to the desert where it was flat and the weather was warm and dry. Many either were rockhounds or they were converted as tailgate rock swaps were a common social activity. Then business does what business does and more commercial vendors started to come. It just got bigger and bigger. Quartzite is fundamentally different from Tuscon. Tuscon is a wholesale show for rock retailers and Quartzite is a show for people that cut and for people that dig there own rock. Yes there is a lot of overlap but if you are a cutter, grinder or sawer of rock Quartzite is the place to find it. If quartzite became a tropical place then the rock people would move the show to some place dryer, with less vegatation and lots of free to camp on Government land so they could hunt rocks. That's right too much vegatation & rain would kill Quartzite.
