The closest little town to me is called Rutledge. I lived there for 13 years as a young adult. Two blinking caution lights, no police, just a small little community with a couple of stores (ended up with one now) a post office and that's about it. When I lived there people new their neighbors. Neighbors helped neighbors. By the time I married and moved a few miles away the small community was changing...a few people were buying up houses and then renting them out through HUD. Suddenly "new" people started popping up. The older people were dieing off. Times were really changing. Crack and meth started coming in. Theft began to a problem. Some real "winners" walking the streets there now.
An older friend of mine ran a small shop and used car lot...usually kept a half dozen or so cars or pickups on his "lot". Specialized in small pickups...Nissans, Toyotas, S-10's, and the like. A good, solid guy. Always happy to see you. He'd greet you with a smile and a chuckle and always made time to talk. I just did a little tire work for him last week and we discussed recent events and the election. His wife goes to the church that I attend...a really sweet and gentle person as is their son. They had another son but he died a few years ago after battling cancer for several years.
Sunday night someone murdered him. He was found face down, some abrasions on his hands (hope he got a good lick on the lowlife), shot in the back of his head. His wallet was gone and his safe was opened and empty. I really feel that this was someone in the community, one of the lowlifes that are too sorry to work.Murder in commission of a robbery....death penalty crime here in Alabama. So far, no arrests. Not even sure if they have any suspects...got plenty to pick from, though.
Alabama really needs "Yellow Mama"...I'd pay the light bill and would even foot the bill for a gallon of yellow paint to freshen her up a bit.

Ed, I'm very sorry about the loss of your friend. It's beyond a shame what evil some are capable of, and often for very little gain. YOU be careful. The bad guy is still out there, and as you said, is probably a local. May God somehow comfort your friend's loved ones in their time of such sorrow and also please keep an eye on you and yours.

I'm so sorry for your loss to such senseless violence. I get where you're coming from about the town. I've seen so many changes here, too. Most of them have not been for the better.

78 years old and still working in his shop...and some low-life, lazy gutter trash comes along and snuffs him out. I figure he knew the killer...the killer "had" to kill him because he could be identified.

Looks like 14 years is the average time spent in Alabama on death row. Maybe the scumbag will move his lips the wrong way when he's about to be apprehended.

Really sad and wrong. The American dream used to be a good and free life and now it is changing to survival until you die from natural causes. The good guys are loosing the battle, not to the bad guys, but to the people that think they know what is best for us. The people that have put into place what Mark is talking about. The wrong people have all the rights and protections.
Best case scenario would be that the person is located, makes a run for it and is shot. Otherwise his rights will protect him and his only punishment will be incarceration. Not enough.
I hope you and the family will help each other get through this dark time. Similar has happened to me a long time ago and I have never gotten over it completely. For their sake I never will. They deserve our memories and we need to keep them close wherever they are. Jim

When the younger son died it really took a toll on the family. Even though Earl was 78, he wasn't supposed to go like this. It ain't gonna be easy on his wife and living son. But, they're good country stock, they'll work through it. Evil...that's all it was.

So sorry to hear Ed. What kind does such.
Tuskegee is close to one of my quartzite spots. Best keep your eyes open in that town. Just feel it in the air.

Sorry for your loss, Ed, and that of his family. The phrase "Going to hell in a hand basket" comes to mind. Just like Sol's suicide scene in the movie Soylent Green, younger folks have absolutely no idea how it used to be. Very sad...
I found it strange when the reporters (on the tv news) doing the story on the Orlando shootings kept saying that people were trying to make sense of it. There IS NO SENSE to it. I guess it's just words they like to say. Jean

One really negative thing that will happen after this is in the past is everyone being wary of all others before they are proven good or bad which will divide us further. Difficult to make friends when you are wary of all. Jim

I am sad, a few years ago a couple I grew up with were murdered. Small town america now has big city crimes and habits. The town I live in now has about a couple dozen people and there is still drugs and theft here. Your loss touches us all, bless you and be careful for now we lock our doors.

Deep sorrow. Ed, condolences to all who knew him. Family amd friends alike.
This in a town where door locks are probably the exception not the rule.

aside: Arlen radio , did you get a new dog? No new dog. Just saw the puppy pic on the internet and stole it for my avatar. I'm still grieving over the two older Pugs we had to have put to aleep and not ready for new pets for a while.
