Naah, you guys had too much Christmas eve pudding. Don't scare the newbies. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to get anywhere. Maybe because I just pull up to DG (or Pow Wow) first thing in the morning and don't leave till dinnertime.

It's the main Street running east and west on the Northside that's the problem.

I hope to be there for the BBQ and such. I am selling at the first show at Tyson Wells January 5-14th so if anyone is around then please do come by Tyson Wells and say hi. I will be in Row A Spaces 3 and 4. That is on the side of Tyson Wells show ground that is closest to hwy 95.
As far as shows go, the Desert Gardens Rock, Gem, and Mineral Show runs from January 1 until February 28th. It is an official show with vendors and dealers. Pow Wow is a five day show sponsored by the Quartzsite Improvement Association along with the Roadrunners Gem and Mineral Club of Quartzsite. Tyson Wells has three 10 day shows starting in January 5th and going through February 11th consecutively; Gem show first, then Sell-A-Rama then Arts & Crafts Fair. There is also a show going on in Prospectors Panarama across from Tyson Wells showgrounds January 2 through February 28. Also the Sports, Vacation, and RV show is going on January 20 through January 28th in a big tent area off hwy 95 just past Tyson Wells area. The old Main Event Showplace in town is also supposed to have several show at this same time but they don't have any information on them right now so no telling what they will be doing. All these shows bring in lots of traffic which Quartzsite isn't equipped to handle since it only happens at this time of year. Also the few restaurants in town are not equipped to handle all the business either. In addition to all that there are several places in town in permanent buildings that are open for business and may be of interest to rockhounds such as Hardy's Beads, Gem World (a wild mind blowing place for beads, trinkets, and Chinese made what nots), and Good Grounds Trading, and a very eclectic bookstore at the other end of town, among a few others. Basically there is a lot going on in Quartzsite in January and February. It has declined a little in the last several years but is still hanging in there despite downturns in the economy and the town trying to tax the heck out of people. If anyone has any questions I would be happy to answer them if I am able so feel free to pm me. No, I don't work for the town of Quartzsite or any of the shows but just thought you might want to know about these events/shows too. I love the open, almost laid back atmosphere at Desert Gardens and since I have been to Quartzsite a lot of years I tend to hang around there but have been known to go to the bead store, Gem World, the leather shop, and other places. I look forward to seeing a lot of you there both old friends and new. Happy Hounding!

So, is DG not running at that time? Still confused. Yes, Susan is correct. To my knowledge all rock shows are open during the powow. DG isn't a "show" per se. It is basically a campground where people setup shop in their "front yard". If people are staying there, they are "open". Only the powow is open that one particular week. Actually Scott, DG is a show similar to a lot of rock shows that last for more than a weekend. Yes, vendors "camp" in their booths both for convenience and security since DG doesn't have on site security guards. I think a majority of vendors in DG are dealers who make their living off of rocks or at least try to do so by going to different shows throughout the year.

If you are boondocking it, hang out with orrum , drocknut and others. (Maybe us!) Campfires and related stories are fun things to do at night. Otherwise, stay in Blythe. Motel 6 is inexpensive and the bar and grill nearby is really quite good. ETA Learned today that the red cactus bar and grill is kaput. Thanks for the heads up susan! See you soon! Bluesky78987 Blythe is quite a good option. Not too far out of the way. Plenty of nice hounding spots down there. I wish I could go to Quartzsite... I'll settle for local events, for now.

Maybe if I get motivated today I'll make a google map with the points of interest marked. Everybody should visit Gem World once in their life . . .

All you newbies, definitely don't spend time going anywhere else (except to visit drocknut) until you've exhausted the options at DG and Pow Wow. Those other areas are more of "I have extra time so I wonder what else I can find".

I'll be driving my truck in as I have a saw for Tony. Mel melhill1659 has already sent me her cell phone number. We're staying in the same place (Super 8). I know you're an early riser, so we will just follow you in as you go by. Dave

Yeah, I'll swing off the freeway and pick you guys up and take you to the "good" Pow Wow parking lot. Probably hit Blythe around 7:30ish. So we have a couple minutes to chat. Arent' you coming in on the 18th though? If you come in the morning, you could get a whole day at Desert Gardens! (which is easy to find and navigate). I know you're good with waking up early, but I guess your wife is coming this time right? Does she like rocks? If not, I can point out a few places she might want to explore.

This may have already been mentioned - but just in case it hasn't. There is also a pretty dang good rock shop in town. This last year the weather was so rotten while we were there and the PowWow was a bit of a bust - but I was able to buy some pretty nice last minute rough rocks at the rock shop. It's located across from Carl's Jr. at the corner of Main and the overpass of the first exit into town. Across the freeway from the Super 8. Edit to add: yeah, T-rocks
