As pretty as AZ pet wood and some opalized pet wood can be, I like my pet wood to look like wood. I have bought mixed lots of pet wood (locations unknown) that had pieces that looked just like wood. I am referring to the color / grain / texture of the rock, not the outer form. In other words, I am not talking about limb casts that look like limbs, I am talking about pet wood that you could slab and polish and someone might mistake for being a polished slab of wood.
Can anyone recommend types / locations / names / sellers of pet wood that looks like real wood? If you have photos of woody-pet-wood, I'd love to see them. I want to see just how wood-like pet wood can be, and I'd like to acquire some if anyone has any good leads.

I have lots and lots and lots of pet wood. More than you could shake a stick at Are you looking for slabs or rough? I would be interested in trading wood for yooperlites that are big and symmetrical to make spheres.

This is a western Washington find that looks like wood. Yeah... jasoninsd , I'm going to need to find some of this. pet wood is my very favorite. I'm hoping to get to stinking water soon. It might have been miket (correction woodman ) that had some cool roots from that area. I've been wanting to go for a while.

Stinking water golden oak. You can still dig it as well. Paulina sycamore and Maury mtn wood have great detail as well. All can still be found.

Lee, which wood ID books? We just got some wood and we have no clue about it (except the AZ rainbow wood).
Happy Thanksgiving to you and Elizabeth!

I find a lot of rather plain wood in the local area. About a year ago I decided to try polishing some and it came out very nice. I've done some for friends that find it on their UTV trips, they love it, too. This wood has a lot of grain, I send kids pieces polished and unpolished, the parents are always amazed at the "wood".

Everything is still in a box, sadly. What I remember is we attended a seminar at a show and bought the book along with a loupe for magnification. The book is specifically for identifying wood, the pre-petrified type, and is limited to species that still exist. When at the petrified forest we saw a book geared more towards petrified woods that may help more with collection location information for materials we don't collect ourselves. Ancient Forests by Frank J Daniels, spendy book but I think it will be under the petrified tree for Elizabeth this year. Yeah, for Elizabeth...
