This is exactly why I do not use any of these types of devices. Even the one smart tv we have has that function turned off which we had to do manually because it comes with that switch turned on.

I know people like to pick on Echo/Alexa devices, but keep in mind that all of your smart devices with voice activation have the same sort of possibilities. This includes your smartphone! Apple, Samsung, Google, etc.

I don't know how many times my wife and I will be talking about some OBSCURE subject, and within 24 hours, some kind of reference pops up on her Facebook, or some ad of some kind!!!

I just got a new iPhone 13 Pro Max because my old Moto Z Force was croaking and I couldn't find another model Android with reviews good enough. The iPhone had the best reviews and even though I despise Apple, I bought it. Had to wait a month because it was backordered, but it finally came on Tuesday. Yesterday I spent hours in the Verizon store while the sales guy transferred my stuff. All my texts wouldn't transfer and a bunch of my contacts didn't either, so I'm systematically going through and adding in the contacts that it didn't transfer.
I made sure none of that voice activated stuff is turned on and I'm turning off everything I can find that has Siri involved. I'm a complete iPhone 'tard, so it's probably going to take me forever to get all this crap turned off or deleted.
And I still don't trust this phone. I'm so paranoid.

I think the programmers can and do turn on access whenever they need/want to. I believe that we have "computers" for phones now. It used to be that a half-way intelligent individual used to be able to "fidget" with computer programs and truly have some level of "control" over what was on their own computers Now, there are no "checks and balances" on these phones/computers. There's no way to access any "programming" on anything on these phones...which means we have to "trust" those who created the programming! Ummm...

I don’t have a phone but don’t be surprised if/when some settings change or revert back after OS updates. Just went through this on a desktop. Unrelated . . . I seldom buy on Amazon but recently ordered some books for the wife’s birthday and the bastard’s bastards snuck SEVEN email addresses and two phone numbers into my email’s address book.

I suspect it is even recording after you turn it off. Big Brother.... Your first statement is true, but it’s not Big Brother. It’s Big Business, and most people opt in.

And I still don't trust this phone. I'm so paranoid. In addition to inactivating voice activated stuff, I’ve also turned off facial recognition. Inputting a six digit PIN really isn’t that difficult. In fact, I’d like the option to up it to 12.

The only way to completely turn off your phone is to take out the battery. So what do these companies do now? They glue them shut to prevent you from doing that.

It may just be me, but I try very hard to NOT purchase modern communication devices that can and will out smart me quickly........maybe outperform, fool or otherwise remotely control what I cannot........that's just what we have to live with now.......a certain reality of the lack of privacy.
What's up with all the need for so many bells & whistles, anyway....? Speaking from actual personal experience shopping for my last three cell phones, (averaging about 3 to 4yrs apart).........there are loads and loads of well established and proven vanilla varieties available.....as a personal example, look-up Galaxy A12, android version 11, one UI 3.1 core, 5000mAh battery, 4 actual functioning camera lenses, SD card and battery transferable.....and a very pocket friendly size. Under $250.00.......every major brand produces B+, A-, decent horse power devices low on bling, because there are droves of folks, like me, who refuse to buy into the latest, greatest hype......especially if it's Apple.
I just read in Forbes, that the majority of cell phone companies real profits come from the lower to mid-range purchases and they out perform many of the higher end models 3:1.........and firmware upkeep and maintenance of those lower end devices, are less reliant upon continuous updates, due to the fact that what their OS's require have been proven and "bugged-out"........where many of the new bling-bling's have, shoved into them, "beta" versions of crap they want the consumer to work-out, Q/A, Q/C at their (consumers) expense......nothing new about that, Microsoft and Apple started that routine during the on-set of their conceptions......and still do.......lol
Besides, why should we need another "degree" in communication software and technology, in order to put the phone on sleep, make/take a phone call, take a picture, text and video chat, when all of that ability has been around for decades now, and most of us consumers "earned" our "degrees" with the conditioning they (manufactures and service providers) shoved down our throats (via our pocketbooks), in order to just keep in touch with some one.......Graham Bell and Thomas Edison are no longer alive to reap the unimaginable benefits they envisioned.......so why keep feeding the beast.....?
Just a Thought........

My BIL & SIL remove their simm cards when they get home. They have a landine. When my daughters are here, it really irritates me that they don't have their phones locked down. They start getting ads geared towards our conversations. Spotify now listens to the room to judge what music to play. Don't like that one bit, either.

Unfortunately I need my phone for my business. If I didn't, I would have a flip phone like Vince.
I do not use my phone for any social media crap -- I rarely go on social media for anything. I don't listen to music, watch movies or videos on my phone. I will use Zoom or Face Time if I have to do virtual showings out of necessity. I don't use voice commands and I turn off the location tracking for everything except Maps, because on occasion I do use it to find a house in an area I'm not really familiar with. I'm disgusted I had to buy an iPhone, but I absolutely have to have a phone.
The learning curve sucks, too.
stephan it may be Big Business, but they are in bed with Big Brother big time.
