RWA3006 What do you do with your banded calcite? I'm thinking of slicing mine so it looks like a bacon suncatcher! LOL So far I haven't done a danged thing with it except let it sit in the yard. Probably use it for carving some day but I will have to be careful because it can delaminate along some of the lines.

Confirmed that it's calcite, we also call it root beer rock and I've sent a fair amount to RTH members. I got mine from an abandoned quarry where they were blasting road base out of a limestone mountain.

Here's a large slab of dino bone that's framed and backlit with LED.

Very nice. I have some specimens that came from old timers I knew who are long gone and it's amazing how nostalgic I feel when I look at them.

I would say that it's not bone because the cell structure does not look right to my eye. Do you know where it came from? If it's from the Utah-Colorado border area the odds are better that it's dino bone. Here's some bone from my collection to compare with.

Why do you store the slabs in kitty litter ?
I saw someone else mention the same thing, so now I'm really curious,
and figure I'm missing something.

The bottom photo of the pair reminds me of islands and continents drifting in an ocean. I especially notice the pie wedge shaped forms on the right side that seem to have once been connected much like the continents in Pangea. And what's with that squiggly helical thing at four o'clock on the bottom photo? Tapeworm? I seem to recall that intestinal parasites have been documented in critters in or before the Jurassic and I believe the formation in question is not a random thing, but is the result of a specific cause. I suspect it's from either parasite or dung beetle, but that's about all I can believe at this point.

Anyone notice the oddities at 3 o'clock and 10 o'clock?

Here's a specimen with some calcite filling a cavity. It also has some layers of chalcedony that previously accumulated on the walls of the void. Notice the dark spot at 3 o'clock that indicates the poo left from a dung beetle.
