Sorry snowflakes, I'm still kickin and ornery as hell.
Been a rough few days since I was last on. Hardly sleeping anymore. Burned out from lack of sleep. Feeling really depressed. Wife has to do almost everything for me now. Walking to the bathroom is a chore. I still manage to take Jake out when mama isn't here to do it. Can't let my little buddy down. I think the poor guy knows my timeclock is winding down. I catch him sitting on the floor watching me. Starting to look like it will be me waiting at that rainbow bridge to walk my little buddy Jake across. actually starting to look forward to that time. A time when we're both young and pain free. Endless fields to run and play in. Huge piles of rocks to dig through with my buddy standing guard over the keepers. Wonder if there's a lapidary shop on the other side of that bridge? Oh, and a bottomless coffeepot.
Keep on rockin my friends. My days may be coming to an end, but I'll be watching and guiding you in your search for the best cutting material and fossils.
Don

Right on, thanks Don. Keep fighting my friend - and keep coming in here whenever possible and rattling a few cages whether they need it or not LOL. You can depend on me to rattle cages. Gotta find my fun where I can these days.

Don - thanks for the update - wish it was better news but your stoic sense of humor about it is an amazing thing. This feels awkward to ask but "if" the worst happens would your wife be able to send one of us a note and let us know? Is there already someone on this board who she knows and would contact? If not I will give you my phone number or email whatever works. Hey Tommy, they haven't planted me yet. I'll go out kicking and screaming.I ain't in any sort of hurry to feed the worms. I'm just trying to get things in order for mama. As for contacts, my buddy Bob / montanamadman and Mike /fossilman are both close friends. Mama will have Bobs cell #. He doesn't get on here often, but he'll let Mike know. I'll be around when I can, as long as I have one good finger to peck at this keyboard. Some days are better than others, so don't expect to hear from me every day. Don

Well, one step closer to being ready for my box and dirt bed. Lawyer stopped bye today so I could scrawl my signature on a durable power of attorney for mama. Ain't easy for a right handed guy to sign something left handed. Could barely read it, but the lawyer is a notary so it has his stamp on it. Told mama not to go out and buy a suit to plant me in. Just an old pair of Levis and a T-shirt. Plant me the same way as I lived my life. No fancy clothes. Don't even own a suit. Just happy that I lasted long enough to see the last election, and help keep the snowflakes in line.

LOL Tela. I spend my evenings watching comic shows on TV. Usually get a laugh out of them. Jake's antics give me a good laugh too.

jakesrocks, how ya doin'? Haven't heard from you in awhile. Still ornery and fighting I hope. Hi all. Been down pretty hard for a few days. Finally got enough strength back to sit in front of my computer for a few minutes. Barely been able to get up from my recliner without help from mama, but strong enough today to do it on my own. Sent mama off for a 2 day vacation with 1 of her girlfriends from work. figured she deserved a break from grouchy old me. They're Gonna spend a couple days checking antique and second hand stores for treasures. She has special orders to watch for rocks or books about them. Got a lot of catching up to do. Be back later. LOL Cliff. My first to ships were old APA's. Fossil fuelers. I'm well aware of the engine room antics as I started out as a MM. Changed rates to SFM in Nam to get away from that hot assed engine room. On another note, stand by tonight. It was home made beef and bean burritos for dinner tonight.

So you were REALLY greased?!?! Not just a play on words. My husband tells me often, 'you just gotta be a guy to understand'! And I'll bet that Shellback kissed "The Baby" too! Thaat's one honer I never received. All of my time was spent north of the equator.

Cliff, don't thank me, thank those who came home in a body bag. Every day I think of how lucky I was to come home in one piece. Some of my buddies weren't so lucky. Back in the day we would transport bodies on destroyers in aluminum coffins stacked in the crews lounge. During heavy seas they would get tossed around. Had a pudgy seaman, yeoman striker, who had messenger watch. His jobs also entailed checking the bodies for being stowed properly. Some got loose and a couple came open. Ole Sugar Bear, nick name, never ever went in that lounge again. Even when we hadn't carried anything in there for a while hehehe Destroyers were the perfect option, close to the fight, pick up in shallow waters and transport back to a port with air capabilities. Bird farms had refers for that but the crews lounge had an air conditioner that ran cold cold so the bodies wouldn't decompose. Remember "greasing" the new guy's butts? Not politically correct in this day an age but was always fun and usually a good fight and strong bonding afterwards. .
LOL. It wasn't just the new guys that got their butts greased. When I made PO2 in Nam, the guys caught me, stripped me down to my skivies, greased me from head to foot and tossed me in the river. It was fun climbing in the big vat of diesel fuel used for cleaning weapons just to wash all that damned grease off. Somewhere in all of my junk I still have a pic of me covered in grease.

Cliff, don't thank me, thank those who came home in a body bag. Every day I think of how lucky I was to come home in one piece. Some of my buddies weren't so lucky. Mine too Forever young.. Last ship DD876 Rogers. There till the end of the fight. Last shots came from our destroyer squadron and the Rogers . Then thank you for all those long Westpac cruises not seeing your baby born, missing out on a lot of life. Remember the happiness when pulling into your home port, dress white manning the rail and all the dependents waiting. Looking through the crowd to spot your young wife and baby.
LOL. After Nam there were no more Westpac cruises. Nam was river boats in the delta, then Spain, Scotland, Little Creek VA, back to Spain, Kings Bay GA, Italy, and Philly for mustering out. Then home to California.

LOL, Boones Farm if I remember correctly. Strawberry Hill, Bali High and a fat, friendly chick at the drive in. Don't get no better. Grin. It might have been Strawberry Hill too. Only been 58 years since that fateful night. Just a bunch of drunk guys around a campfire on the beach, until the cops came and ran us off.

Thanks for thinking about us Don. We been thinking about you too, you ornery ole fart. The recliner seems like my choice too. Would have thought a darn ole hippy would have some whacky weed to medicate with when the happy pills aren't enough. Hated the opium suppositories for pain when I got shot. Not user friendly. Like the little straws but they constipate the crap into you. Love Jake extra cause he for sure loves you. Cliff Been thinking about that wacky weed a lot lately. Unfortunately SD isn't a medical weed state. Only smoked the crap once in my life, way back at my high school graduation beach party after drinking cheap wine from a gallon jug. Puked my guts up and never tried it again. Oh well, they say you only die once. Lately that seems like a goal to shoot for, but I'm too damned hard headed to give up that easy. Besides, someone needs to be around here to keep all the snowflakes in line. Don

Damn, been almost a month since I gave an update. think the old biological time clock is starting to wind down. Not getting any sleep. I for the most part just sit in my recliner all day and night, listening to the TV with my eyes closed. Barely have the strength to get up most days. At least I'm not down to the garden hose in a bucket and bedpan stage yet. Still managing to make it to the bathroom, and to take Jake out.
My trucker buddy is now the sole owner of the rock shop in Billings, MT. He called today to give me the good news. He plans to be retired from trucking by years end. He'll be coming to clean out my rocks and equipment as soon as he gets his vacation time. Hope I'm still kicking, so I can see him one more time before I go to feed the worms.
Damned doctor won't give me stronger happy pills so I can sleep at night. He wants me in the hospital, so he can run up a huge bill without doing anything that will help me. Doctor be damned. I ain't going in the hospital. I'd rather die in my recliner with Jake at my side.
Anyway, that's the local news for now. Don
