I here that it is a real experience diving for jade in the cove; I think one of the members here posted about it. A friend is coming up on the long weekend to do some digging and he was wanting some black jade and I happen to have some black guatemalan so I sliced a bit off at the local rock clubs shop and devided another peice of guat. jadeite so I could slice it at home. that botryoidal CA. jade, or from any local, is a real eye catcher and you probably were given a nice gift. I don't know how many times I've looked at that chunk of jadeite in the picture and said to myself "no-one will notice if I slice enough off for 3-4 rings" :<)) I've restrained myself till I get better at cabbing. I'll practice on the guatemalan till I decide what to do.

Unfortunately even here in BC, the good quality material is costly and hard to come by as outlined in the article, most of it goes to New Zealand and China or other jade loving country right from the mine, to be resold as their own. The nephrite from other areas of N.America, like CA. or OR. and WY. all have their unique signature and look but aren't as desirable in some markets because most are dark; lucky for us. Lloyd oops!! forgot to say that the picture is of a half kilo peice of tricolour burmese jade that was given to someone as a gift back in the fifties and I aquired at the local thrift store

I thought our countries had free speach and access? ? Just to mention; I haven't noticed any of the NRA types staying out of other threads; not trying to start a war here but you are acting like you want to start something when the thread title reads the way it does. Since when does free speach and thought only work one way? Your way. Lloyd IMHO

wow! that was a long leg of the jaunt; kitty corner all the way cross the country! I'm glad I didn't have to pay for that leg; it cost 27$ just to get it to the next province here. Lloyd

Thanks I've wrecked a lot of them; actually, they blew up in my hands, fractures everywhere, so when I got the nice colour in this one i figured I'd take the time to save it. The "ghosts" in the other welos I have are just orb shaped and I've never seen one that has tendrils so this is a weird one thats for sure Lloyd

His style wouldn't be liked by everyone but he talked about everyone in his songs and told their stories in a simple, yet eloquent way, and his style was his own.

I use a drip system with a small tap to regulate the flow and figure there is no sense getting wet if you don't have to so as I use the different grits I turn the water as needed to flush residue away or when working the higher grits just to keep things cool. i get about 5 hours out of a 2 gallon pail if I go from rough to finish but if I'm just roughing only about 2 depending on the hardness of the rock.

Thanks all for the comments. I don't want it to go out of my hands and into someone elses at some point and them think it is something it's not Ginge. I can get the optical resin and use it for some things but not this. Lloyd

Thanks Diane, I was really surprised when it started to show colour because from the side they knocked off there was absolutely nothing. I have 3-4 more like that so it is encouraging.

I bought some practice rough from an ebay seller knowing full well it had issues. This one came as a half nodule and the sorters must have xray vision because they seem to be able to see just how far the opal extends into the nodule and if it is going to be a low yeild it gets auctioned. Well this one fooled them as far as colour is concerned; and me too. The angle the end was knocked off the nodule showed a perfectly clear interior with no colour whatsoever; but a couple of fractures. Working carefully on the diamond laps 600g, I managed to keep it in one peice as I shaped it and got rid of the matrix. I then gave it a quick wash in water and let it dry for a couple of days; the diamond laps don't introduce much water into the welo at all. I forgot to mention that as I cut the nodule off the covered side, amazing colours started to emerge. The stone had originall gotten exposed at exactly the wrong angle to show any colour but from the other side it is one of the showiest I have seen. The octopussy looking white "Ghost" is something welos sometimes have After it dried for a couple of days I dropped it into my heated uv activated mirror adhesive under 25in.of vacumn for a week. After taking it out it sat in the sun; not much around these days, for 2 days and then I finished cutting and polishing it. The epoxy does not harden clear and is why I picked it to use, it leaves fine white lines in the fractures. This photo does it absolutely no justice; opals are impossible for me to photo the flash of; they oversaturate the camera. Thanks for looking Lloyd The size is about 20mmx15mmx6mm and the picture is taken about 3ft away from a 60w fl. bulb Attachments:

I still like to use hand tools when I can; not too much work like ripping or building a house. The teeth are set to each side to create a kerf as mentioned and the finer the teeth the narrower the kerf; hence the varying angle on the peice you turn; the anvil if you like. The saw is put in the saw vice; I still have one of those too, and this tool is lowered down on the teeth and every second one is set and the blade turned and the others set to the other side. The teeth are then cut at an angle with a file back and forth too so they rip through the wood cleanly and the saw doesn't bind.
