I think the photos came out retty good, when you open them up you can see some depth to the stone, a hallmark of a good polish, so I think they came out well!!

Been a while since I have been on here, more medical drama in my life I don't need, but anyways......... I was doing the Cabbing demo for my clubs annual rock show and 1 of the vendors, a member of the club also, gave me a piece of Syn Quartz for a steal so I figured I would cab it to see what happens. I didn't do any before and after photos, I actually did this as part of the demo on cabbing so I figured I'd enter it here now that it is done. The corners are removed because 1 of them chipped away while shaping so I cut the corners and brought the line up and across the face of the cab, both sides, and I think it came out rather nicely. So here it is, my double sided pillow cut syn quartz cab. all criticisms appreciated as this material is new to me.

A good way to clean your wheels is with a spray bottle of water and a tooth brush, spray the wheels while holding a tooth brush against it, and always clean your wheels backwards.... from the finest wheel down to the coarsest. This way any grit that gets onto the wheel will probably be finer than the wheel and not be a problem.
Also, I find that if contamination occurs, it will happen between the 220 & 280 wheels. If you have dirty water after the 220 wheel, then you need to clean it out and use clean water. I use clean water at least every other wheel and have no problems that way. then clean the wheels when done for the day.
Good Luck with it!!

that's new to me too! Just did my first craft show/bazaar and did better than I hoped, but there were no extra fees for anything... even the larger shows around here don't do that.

I use a thicker (0.60) blade on my 10 inch but I also slab with it as well as trim and the thicker blade is helpful with my cutting style as I tend to be a little heavy handed with the feed rate (me pushing material into the blade)
If you are only going to trim material with it I would go as thin as you can with the blade as it will cut faster with a thinner blade. Especially if you have a power feed.

just from looking at the rough side in the pictures, it looks to me to be serpentine, I have seen similar to this too. Others will chime in as they read the post. nice looking piece you got there!

Those are amazing cabs. Crazy lace might be my favorite rock. I was wondering the same thing Mario was about putting the groove where the rocks come together. Did you avoid that spot because it's not as strong? Thanks Jugglerguy and The Dad_OhsThe first issue I seen with putting the groove at the seam is that the graveyard cap has to be as thin as possible to get the see through effect. The second and more important issue is that if the groove was in between the layers or even right at the top of the obsidian then you would see the wire right through the graveyard portion. Chuck I can understnd that reasoning Thanx for that !!

the only thing I can think of for not doing it is if the stone is too thin where they meet and as such a thick doublet bottom would be better for the groove.

Those are all really nice looking pieces... I really like the doublet too ... have not had a chance to try to make one yet.
After looking at yours, with the groove in it which I think is great, I have to ask this, for anyone that can answer it, ... What about putting the groove where the 2 pieces meet? seems to me that if you back cut the mating edges of the 2 pieces it would leave you with a natural groove to put the wire in?

I have some 30+ pounds of rough Montanas in buckets in my shop and love to work them when I get bored and am looking for something different. I love the variety of shapes too!! Everytime I dig into a bucket I know that I will spend time just looking at a few pieces and marveling over the color/shape/texture of each piece!!

I always get foam like that in my barrels.... never had an issue as there was no pressure behind it. The foam actually holds some of the grit within in so there is always grit near the surface as the rocks tumble, this also means that the grit is moving throughout the mix better and , at least for me, gives better results. I wouldn't sweat it as long as your not getting bulges.

I have an old Richadson Ranch flat grinder that uses dry paper discs on a rubber backing and I can usually do a slab or face on a large rock in about 2.5 - 3 hours start to finish which would be 4 sizes of paper and polishing on a leather wheel with Cerium Oxide. But my saws make very smooth cuts, especially my 10 inch!!

A cab does need to have a flat back, that only makes it easier to set in metal and helps it lie flat when worn. If you wrap it in wire it won't make a difference at all.
Looks good to me !!!
that should say... does not need to have a flat back.... sorry.. brain farts gettin worse!! lol
