I get these from a location really close to a uranium deposit and have checked them with the Geiger counter as they contain several uranium minerals such as carnotite (potassium vanadium uranyl hydroxide). Radioactivity level just above safer level so not overly dangerous, but not pieces you want to handle too much. I have some other really nice specimens from a previous trip I will have to photograph, and picked up some smaller pieces I am thinking about tumbling for the heck of it. Most have a chalcedony base that from what I can tell has turned green from the radiation as the chalcedony specimens I dug from the uranium deposit are the same green color.
Here is a sample of the radioactive green chalcedony.

This is one of the main things I wanted to get more of on the way to Reno. Found some really nice pieces. I mainly look for the purple cataclasite, but did find some nice green cataclasite and for the first time found red cataclasite.

Just got back from a trip to Reno and made some stops on the way up, while I was up there and the way back.
Decided to explore a new location on the way up and found an obsidian field, mainly Apache tear, on the way.

Good Morning. Waking up to nearly a foot of snow in Denver and it looks like field trips will be postponed for a couple of weeks or maybe till the Spring. Being quite new to this hobby and jumping right into field trips on my own and with rock clubs this summer, I now have time to learn more about geology and specifically how to use that knowledge to find rocks in the wild. I thought I would turn to the experts and ask….What are the resources you would recommend? Learn how to navigate Mindat.org Can help with learning how to ID various rocks and you can search for various mineral deposits by mineral, or can look up names of mines to see what minerals are known for that location, then see other mines in the same area and see what they have, etc.

Wow , what are you talking about those look amazing for scrap and cuttings. You nailed it perfectly done from what I can tell looking at the pictures you posted. I’m almost in tears laughing and thinking I’m stressing over rocks I paid for and you used left overs. Double tap I’m out. Those are fantastic and well worth the effort you put into them so cool can’t wait to see your next batch. Thanks so much for sharing loved them I see you have a heeler fur baby. I do too. This is my little girl Jax.

I will have to check them all out. Irons are like gold nuggets, all of them are unique with their own character. The Franconia strewnfield has given up lots of cool little irons through the years. Cool place to rockhound as well. And to find unexploded ordinance.

That 35.4g Canyon Diablo you have has neat character. Looks like a cats head. Did you see the two Sikhote Alins, the one that looks like a horse's head and the one that looks like a falcon? They are really cool ones.
