FWIW I had the dreaded climb the blade problem on my old beacon star tried all the above which are very good advise. I came to the conclusion that there should be no perceptible lifting of the rock if the vise was firmly attached to the guide rails, wiggle your vise side to side and up and down if there is any play it will allow the rock to be able to move up or down or side to side. In my particular case the vise runs on round rods and upon inspection I found that the holes that the rods run through were wallowed out. I am not familiar with the Covington vise system but if there is an adjustment that you can use for tightening the vise that is good but if it is wear you may need to replace or modify something. In my case I had to re-drill the holes and add a bushing. With all this being said I then had to go back and readjust all the above suggestions a worn part will have a domino effect. Good luck

That looks nice but I have to ask Is there a bushing/bearing or at least some sort of grommet missing between the shaft collar and motor?

I use 8x3 exclusively with expando wheels the last I bought were either Eastwind or the Kingsley house brand expensive but I like them. I have hesitated going with the narrower belts and the Nova type. I like the drape(the flex from the rubber backing) you get from the expando's and the width.

Sure that should be no problem just don'r engage the half nut and don't force the rock through.

Okay so now that the bindings are done and you are ready to make the basket/bezel/cradle/ whatever do you use any sort of technique to hold the slick stone while forming the basket from experience I know this can be problematic. Let me reiterate I am not asking because I don't know the basics of wrapping but am going to use this info in an upcoming project of mine and every one has some special technique they use.

Okay this is good now that you have your pieces cut too length and layed out for the binding process do you use something like painters tape, wire, a third hand to hold the pieces together for binding? Do you use wire from a spool or do you use the loose coils?

Thanks zarguy thats the kind of input I'm looking for but it's for a project I have in mind and not for my venture into wrapping. I guess what I'm really wanting to find out is what the maximum amount of wire used for say the largest cab one would normally wrap for instance would it be like 6", 10" or what for the cab. I sort of stated it wrong in the OP. I know some of you make some pretty big uns.

After you have determined how much wire you need to encase the cab is there a rule of thumb that you use for the wire needed to create the bail?
