I've been doing very similar too, letting the mud settle and then removing most water, then it's the dustbin for the mud when it's dry but i might consider the compost heap, if flowers seem to like it.

wow thanks guys, at least I'm on the right track. I know this is not a quick hobby and I can be fairly patient. And yes being my first batch I just collected anything that looked pretty, lol. I'm learning well, you guys are great teachers and i'm grateful for all your help. I have now got another 'load' started in course grit and have been more selective in my stones, discarding anything too pitted.

lol, yes definitely fools gold, i couldn't be that lucky to find it laying around, but I just love the look of it. the first pic like, it looks like a miniature cave and the last pic, the dark flick is actually shiny black.

OH WOW, how cool. been down looking for agates locally here but only found a couple of extremely small bits, I mean tiny too. Tons of Jasper, well i think thats what it is anyway, lovely deep red and mostly with tiny little black flecks in it, can't wait to see it polished. I did pull the beach stuff out, wash and dry to see how i was going, but only a couple of small spots are shiny at the moment, think this pumice i got for polishing really isn't up to it. i know it all takes time but thought i would see a bit of shine after a week.

Thanks for the heads up on picture posting, not used to it through photobucket etc.

thanks very much for the advice connrock, i will note this info and really appreciate your guidance. I have just now emptied my polishing barrel, rinsed and left to dry my collection and yes very little shine. They have been in for 5 days but i'm using pumice powder, not really sure if this is any good, it came in the pack with the other grits. Trouble is for me i guess is to id rock before starting, but i'm sure this will come with time. I will have to re test my rocks i think lol. I do have a varied selection of sizes in the barrel, i did read about filling in the little spaces but i really do take this all in and many thanks I have changed my 'filter' ideas, im pouring into a big bowl to discard and leaving in the greenhouse to evaporate the water then i will discard the dry powder into the bin. is this a better idea? if not what do you guys do with it?

thanks for such a warm welcome. Stone whisper, possibly, looking in to it but i believe it's east coast Scotland that has the best, i however live on the west lol. but will be making a trip out very soon i hope, just have a gearbox to change first, haha. I did pick up a very small rock the has very small coloured bands in it, but really i am so new to this i don't even know what stones i have.
